"Thank God, I always watch them," she told NBC Los Angeles. What was described as a coyote positions to grab Brittany Furlan's dog Neena from her backyard in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday. People are encouraged to not leave small pets outside unsupervised and to bring small pets inside at night to prevent coyote attacks.

DECLINING POPULATIONSScientists estimate at least 85% of the world's oyster reefs have been lost, largely to overharvesting and disease. To harvest oysters, boats drag an underwater dredge across oyster reefs, collecting reef material that is dumped onto the boat. But dredging destroys the oyster reefs, which are also a habitat for fish and crabs, says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. "And so, especially in the past decade, we've seen impacts from both harvest and heavy rainfall, heavy drought impacting those oyster populations."

First introduced to North America by early explorers hundreds of years ago, feral hogs can wreak havoc on agriculture, tearing up soil and eating plants. According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, an estimated 6.9 million feral hogs roamed the United States in 2016 – with more than one-third of that population, 2.6 million hogs, living in Texas. For hunters like Mitchell Birkett, a 21-year-old Texas A&M University student, going after the hogs was a chance to combine pleasure with purpose.

A Washington state woman was injured after a bear knocked her to the ground outside her home Saturday morning, a wildlife official said. The bear was ultimately killed in the same area later in the morning by Fish and Wildlife officers, it said. "Black bear mothers seldom attack people in defense of cubs," the U.S. Forest Service said in a primer on black bears. Washington hasn't had a fatal black bear attack on humans since 1974, Fish and Wildlife officials said. Each case involved a different species, including a brown bear in Alaska, a black bear in Connecticut, and a grizzly in Wyoming, officials said.

Gray wolves are being fatally poisoned in the remote northeast corner of Washington state, according to state wildlife officials, who said Monday that six have been found dead. Two carcasses were discovered recently and four were found in February, the state Fish and Wildlife Department reported. Gray wolves are listed by the state as endangered, and they're federally endangered in the western two-thirds of the state. The wolves, part of the Wedge pack, roam the northeast part of the state in Stevens County. Fish and Wildlife officials said there were 206 known wolves in 33 packs in Washington at the end of 2021.

There was a liquid-nitrogen leak at SpaceX's Texas launch site, federal regulators told Bloomberg. An aerial video shows patches of wetland that are snow-white from the liquid-nitrogen leak. Elon Musk's aerospace company uses liquid nitrogen as a coolant when launching rockets. Bloomberg reported that the leak happened three days before SpaceX's Starship rocket booster prototype burst into flames at the launch site. SpaceX didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider about the liquid-nitrogen leak outside normal business hours.
