This week, the 28-year-old venture capital firm debuted a new pair of funds totaling $2.3 billion, a substantial sum during an abysmal time for the industry's fundraising efforts. The European-born firm is structured in a way that investors across continents invest out of the same funds. The new funds include $800 million to invest at the early stage and $1.5 billion to invest in growth. Those figures are slightly down from the firm's last fundraise, when it collected $900 million for an early-stage fund and $2 billion for a growth fund. That year, Index saw seven portfolio companies go public at a market cap of more than $1 billion, including Roblox and Robinhood.

☆ Alpacas test positive for H5N1 bird flu for the first time

CNN —Highly pathogenic avian influenza, sometimes called bird flu, has been confirmed in alpacas for the first time, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories. The animals that tested positive were on a farm in Idaho where poultry had tested positive for the virus and were culled in May. The alpacas tested positive May 16, the USDA said in a news release. The gene sequence of viruses isolated from the alpacas shows that it is closely related to the H5N1 viruses that are currently circulating in dairy cattle. Scientists have closely watched the H5N1 virus for roughly two decades.

Studies have revealed that Juanita was a healthy girl between 13 and 15 when she died from a blow to the head. Tissue depth markers and CT scans helped Oscar Nilsson reconstruct the Ice Maiden's face. For the researchers who have spent years studying Juanita, the arduous process to bring her back to life was worth it.

But instead of spending it on the pizzeria, he used the majority of the money to buy a farm in Vermont, eight alpacas, a pickup truck and a vintage car. On Wednesday, a federal judge in Massachusetts sentenced him to two years in prison and ordered him to pay nearly $680,000, the Justice Department said. Mr. McIntyre, 59, pleaded guilty in April to four counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering. “This was no momentary lapse in the fog of the pandemic,” Joshua S. Levy, the acting U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, said in a statement.

Meta just released a big new AI model called Llama 2. Meta didn't disclose how much water it used to train this AI model. Ren took that and looked at how efficient Meta data centers are when it comes to using energy and water. That yielded his estimate, which he said is almost double the water footprint of Meta's previous big AI model, Llama 1, which came out earlier this year. Meta's data centers used just over 5 million cubic meters of water in 2021.
