Now, San Francisco-based asset manager Newday Impact Investing believes that using what it calls an Ecological Benefits Framework (EBF), or "a shared market architecture," could provide a new way forward in social investing. "One of the challenges has been that there are a whole bunch of different [ESG] frameworks. But they're all super complicated oftentimes even from organization [to] organization, as impact interpretations are very, very different," said Doug Heske, CEO of Newday Impact. By 2027, the goal is to have 70% of McKesson suppliers (measured by spending), have their own SBTi-approved GHG emissions reduction targets. Global food-tech innovators like Corning Life Sciences and ScaleUp Bio are among those setting up shop. Inside a lab on the west coast of Singapore, the future of food production is being developed — or fermented, to be more precise. The company is ScaleUp Bio, a local contract development and manufacturing organization that provides submerged microbial and precision fermentation for food-tech startups. In the long term, this will reduce costs compared to traditional agricultural methods and help make food production more sustainable. Despite the sector's immediate funding challenges, Singapore is committed to being a consistent partner and helping companies with similar goals achieve success.

Spanish farmer Miguel Moreno was an early adopter of so-called cover crops. Spain's drought-hit olive oil production slumped to 663,000 tonnes last year, less than half the average of 1.45 million tons recorded in the previous four harvests, according to the government. In January, it began subsidising farmers who use cover crops as part of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). She said the company was pushed both by customers such as Walmart in the U.S. and by regulation to buy olive oil from producers using sustainable practices. Pig prices soared in Europe last year as output was cut by farms squeezed by high grain and energy costs. The EU pork industry has been buffeted in the past decade by a Russian trade embargo, the westward spread of African swine fever and the COVID-19 pandemic. "We're continuing to add costs to the overall pork production chain," Justin Sherrard, global strategist for animal protein at Rabobank, said. That may mean EU pork exports, whose share of production more than doubled to 21% between 2000 and 2020, have peaked. But an inflationary economy may make consumers less ready to accept rising pork prices and deepen a shift towards chicken as a cheaper, more convenient option.

Catalonia, Spain CNN —Standing in his field of stunted, withered maize, Santi Caudevilla is very worried. It’s becoming increasingly hard to make ends meet as crops shrivel through lack of water – or cannot be planted at all. “This is the worst period that we have had for the last 100 years,” Samuel Reyes, director of the Catalan Water Agency, told CNN. BUENOS AIRES, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Argentina confirmed on Saturday two new cases of bird flu detected in wild birds, three days after reporting the first findings of the disease in the South American region. Argentina, along with Uruguay - two important international agricultural producers - this week declared a state of sanitary emergency due to the first cases reported last Wednesday. Avian flu, which has reached new corners of the globe, has become endemic for the first time in some wild birds that transmit the virus to poultry, experts said. Several countries in South America, including Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, have already found cases of bird flu in their territory. Brazil, the world's biggest chicken exporter, has never reported a case but is on alert.
Spanish entrepreneur Alejandro Blaas Nacle is using tech to help farmers protect their crops. As CEO of Plataforma Tierra, he's tapping data to help farmers make informed agricultural decisions. Plataforma Tierra can also help farmers calculate the optimal amount of fertilizer to use based on the crop type grown and the soil. There's a tool to help farmers better understand their own soil management and a comprehensive pest-management tool. By participating in this type of community, farmers can learn, for example, about a newly discovered disease or an issue with crops on a neighboring property.

Chefs walk past the logo of Israeli start-up Redefine Meat which produces 3D printed plant-based vegan meat, at SIAL food and innovation exhibition in Villepinte, near Paris, France October 19, 2022. REUTERS/Benoit TessierPARIS, Oct 19 (Reuters) - The arrival of veggie meat dishes on Parisian steakhouse menus with names such as "tenderloin" and "flank" poses a challenge to French government efforts to ban meat names for plant-based products. The products of Redefine Meat made their debut in a Parisian restaurant this week after the Israeli startup firm struck a deal with importer Giraudi Meats to drive European distribution of its "New Meat" steak cuts produced on 3D printers. Beyond Meat (BYND.O), one of the world's leading plant-based meat producers, cut its revenue forecast last week. Redefine Meat sells its New Meat in almost 1,000 restaurants in Israel, Britain, the Netherlands and Germany, and they currently pay about $40 per kilo for its steak cuts.
