I got altitude psychosis a few hundred meters from high camp as I scaled the frigid face of Huayna Potosi, the ninth-highest mountain in the Bolivian Andes. The geodesic dome was surrounded by snow at Huayna Potosi High Camp. Elizabeth LavisThanks to my excellent guide, I made it to high camp and spent the night in an orange geodesic dome perched on Potosi's precarious eastern side. He rapidly identified the seriousness of the situation, carried my day pack the rest of the way, and helped me ascend slowly to high camp. While I was fairly fit and prepared to climb Huayna Potosi, I didn't consider the mental or extreme physical toll the mountain would take.

For older adults and outdoor workers, it can be deadly. As an editor on the Well desk at The Times, I work on stories about health issues like extreme heat every day. For many health issues we report on, my thinking is: Well, that’s terrible. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay alert to the signs of heat illness. It’s called heat acclimatization, and The Times published a story about it this morning.

The Tokyo Olympics in 2021 were the hottest in history. But the Paris Games could soon edge them out for the title. A June report highlighted the potential health risks for athletes competing in extreme heat at this year’s Games. Training for the Olympics is now as much about athletes’ ability to handle the heat as it is about strength and speed. “The best way a person can prepare is acclimatization,” said Dr. Carolyn Broderick, the medical director of the Australian Olympic team at the Paris Olympics.

The cause of death was not immediately known and authorities will perform a post-mortem to find out more, the outlet reported. Uday – who was named by Indian citizens in a contest – was among 20 cheetahs airlifted to India over the past few months from Africa. The news of the deceased 6-year-old cheetah came just three weeks after his fellow feline, Sasha, died from a kidney infection. Laurie Marker, founder of the Namibia-based Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), which also helped with transferring the animals, said re-establishing a population is very difficult. In late March, the country welcomed four newborn cheetahs for the first time since the species disappeared from India more than 70 years ago.
CNN —Any air travel can be stressful, but facing down a long-haul flight can be especially intimidating. Flight attendants on long-haul flights are provided with spaces to rest. Flight attendants need to be alert throughout the journey, so they will take it in turns to refuel via mid-flight power naps. Flight attendants will greet a returning colleague with a cup of tea or coffee. For flight attendants, Major says, that will involve working over periods in excess of 24 hours.

Climbers who ascend higher than 26,000 feet on Mount Everest enter the "death zone." In the death zone, climbers' brains and lungs are starved for oxygen, their risk of heart attack and stroke is increased, and their judgment quickly becomes impaired. In 2019, at least 11 people died on Everest, almost all of whom spent time in the death zone. These extra, unplanned hours in the death zone might have put the 11 people who perished at higher risk, though it's hard to determine the specific causes of each death. Temperatures in the death zone never rise above zero degrees Fahrenheit.
