To the Editor:Re “Universities Choose Different Ways to End Unrest” (news article, May 2):The rigid dialogue on American college campuses about the Israel-Hamas war has been fruitless. The other side absolves Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli government of any wrongdoing. My encouragement to the college protesters on both sides is to stop doing easy things like setting up encampments and chanting slogans at each other. Instead, join together to do the hard work of trying to find a sustainable solution to peace in the Middle East. Leave blind partisanship to politicians, and use your intelligence, energy and creativity to be the generation that solves the problem.

But with Mr. Trump’s intervention persuading congressional Republicans to abandon the border deal that they themselves had demanded, Mr. Biden finally has an opportunity to shift from defense to offense. “Joe Biden blamed President Trump for the border crisis that Biden himself created,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the former president. Mr. Trump made clear that he saw the deal not as a solution but a threat to his bid to reclaim his office. Image Mr. Trump ridiculed the idea that Mr. Biden could deflect blame after three years of failing to secure the border. For three years, Republicans had a clear story line when it came to the border — Mr. Biden either intentionally or incompetently opened the floodgates.

I’d had the privilege of a youth — adolescence and young adulthood — in countries where being Palestinian was fairly common. The task of the Palestinian, we’ve seen in the past two weeks, is to audition for empathy and compassion. In the past couple of weeks, I’ve watched Palestinian activists, lawyers, professors get baited and interrupted on air, if not silenced altogether. What is the word of a Palestinian against a machinery that investigates itself, that absolves itself of accused crimes? Diasporically or not, being Palestinian is the quintessential disrupter: It messes with a curated, modified tape.

In a pretrial court filing, James’ office estimated that Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion. They've also called accountants Donald Bender and Camron Harris, whose firms Trump hired to prepare his financial statements. A retired Deutsche Bank official testified the financial statements were key to Trump securing hundreds of millions of dollars in loans. Weisselberg acknowledged that information in Trump’s financial statements wasn’t always accurate, such as valuing his penthouse based on the wrong size. In a decision last month, Engoron resolved the lawsuit's top claim, ruling that Trump committed years of fraud by inflating the value of assets in his financial statements.

President Trump now faces 78 felony counts in three different criminal cases, not to mention a slew of civil lawsuits and trials alleging all sorts of wrongdoing. At least in the court of public opinion, though, his defense can be boiled down to three words. The real outrage, Mr. Trump’s defenders maintained, is Hunter Biden’s shady business dealings. The Justice Department, they claimed, is only going after the former president to cover up for the current president. Mr. Trump is a victim persecuted by his enemies, so the argument goes, while Hunter Biden is a one-man crime wave who personifies the Washington swamp.

That's according to Jay Shetty, a former monk turned life coach and New York Times bestselling author. In his self-help book, "Think Like a Monk," Shetty explains that negative thoughts practically surround us. "Every day we are assaulted by negativity," Shetty writes. Negative thoughts are more prevalent than we may think. On average, a person has 11 negative thoughts every day, including "I'm not good enough" or "I'm not good looking," according to a January poll of over 2,000 people from StudyFinds.

There is no evidence that former U.S. President Donald Trump published a Truth Social post claiming that he plans to issue himself a “secret pardon” after prosecutors unsealed an indictment against him on June 9. The screenshot appears to show a post published via Donald Trump’s official Truth Social account (@realDonaldTrump). A search through Trump’s Truth Social account did not reveal the post, however (here). Archived versions of his Truth Social saved on June 9 and 10 (here), (here). Reuters did not find any credible media reports on Trump posting on Truth Social a plan to issue himself a pardon (archive.is/wip/OSoTa), (archive.is/wip/ybOH4).

I love writing about personal finance, but personal responsibility isn't the be-all and end-all. ROME, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The Jesuit Roman Catholic religious order said on Tuesday that accusations of sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse against a prominent member were highly credible and that restrictions against him have been tightened. Father Johan Verschueren, Rupnik's superior in the religious order, posted an update on the case, which has rattled the worldwide religious order and the Vatican since it broke into the open in November. Rupnik has not spoken publicly of the accusations and Verschueren said he has declined to meet Jesuit investigators. The new restrictions particularly ban him from having any artistic activities with churches or other religious institutions, Verschueren said. He said a Jesuit investigation has determined that the alleged abuse took place from the mid-1980s until 2018.
VATICAN CITY, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Thursday denounced psychological violence and abuse of power in the Church, as the case of a prominent priest accused of exploiting his authority to sexually abuse nuns has rocked the Vatican. The 86-year-old pope made his comments in his annual Christmas address to cardinals, bishops and other members of the Curia, the central administration of the Vatican. Francis has often used the occasion to decry perceived flaws in the top bureaucracy, such as gossip, cliques and infighting. After mentioning wars, the pope said: "Besides the violence of arms, there is also verbal violence, psychological violence, the violence of the abuse of power, the hidden violence of gossip." He added that no one should "profit from his or her position and role in order to demean others".
Rupnik is at the centre of scandal that has engulfed the Jesuits, a Catholic order of priests and brothers, of which Pope Francis is a member. Some top Jesuits have called for a full review of how the order and the Vatican have handled the case. It said it had commissioned an unnamed non-Jesuit to investigate Rupnik, 68, after the Vatican received a complaint last year. The Jesuits gave the results to the Vatican doctrinal department, which closed the case in October, citing the statute of limitations. On Dec. 7, Jesuit leader Father Arturo Sosa said nothing had been hidden, but later contradicted himself.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine said Christmas can now be celebrated on December 25. It previously marked Christmas on January 7, alongside the Russian Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine announced that its assembly had voted in favor of letting parishes choose whether to mark Christmas on December 25. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine is distinct from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, with the latter maintaining ties to Moscow until recently, The Guardian noted. Russia's Orthodox Church has supported Russia's war in Ukraine, with its leader saying in September that dying against Ukraine is an act of "sacrifice" that absolves soldiers of their sins.
Members of the press are rooting for the failure of the latest John Durham prosecution, because they think it absolves them of their roles in the collusion hoax. Nor are the feelings of special counsel Durham hard to guess. They are likely identical to those of a previous exposer of FBI misfeasance, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz , who could not have failed to be surprised and a little appalled at the media’s indifference to the truths he and his team labored to reveal at taxpayer expense.
Sept 29 (Reuters) - The Australian Federal Court has dismissed a petition by the country's corporate regulator against Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA.AX) and its pension unit on allegations of improperly collecting commissions, the regulator said. However, the dismissal of this petition by the court is a blow to consumer advocates who wanted tougher regulation, and also absolves CBA of some of the most damaging allegations aired at the inquiry. The regulator said on Thursday that the court found that the payments made by Colonial to CBA did not constitute benefits within the definition of "conflicted remuneration". CBA in an emailed response to Reuters acknowledged the judgement, but refrained from commenting any further.
