New York CNN —Federal prosecutors are calling for onetime crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried to be sentenced to 40-50 years in prison for stealing billions of dollars from customers and defrauding investors in his now-bankrupt crypto exchange, FTX. Bankman-Fried, who turned 32 this month, was convicted in November of stealing more than $8 billion and engaging his employees in a yearslong coverup, in what prosecutors have called one of the largest financial frauds in history. “The enormous scale of the fraud at FTX is measured not just by the amount of money that was stolen,” prosecutors said in a filing in Manhattan federal court on Friday. Under federal sentencing guidelines, Bankman-Fried could face a maximum sentence of 110 years. Bankman-Fried’s lawyer, Marc Mukasey, told CNN on Friday the defense would have a response “early next week.”

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's president vowed Wednesday not to tolerate the prolonged walkouts by thousands of junior doctors, calling them “an illegal collective action” that threatens public health and shakes the country’s governing systems. Their walkouts have subsequently caused hundreds of canceled surgeries and other treatments at their hospitals and burdened South Korea's medical service. But if senior doctors joined the walkouts, South Korea's medical service would suffer a major blow. The Korean Medical Association, which represents doctors in South Korea, has expressed its support for the striking junior doctors, but hasn't decided whether to take part in the walkouts. Police were investigating allegations that five senior KMA officials incited and abetted the junior doctors' walkouts, and said they summoned one of them Wednesday.

In fact, the S & P 500's now-6% decline from its cycle peak began almost too perfectly, exactly as the often-tough month of August got underway, continuing into September, the worst month for stock performance through history. Similar reassuring stats are spit out when accounting for years when the S & P 500 was up more than 10% through July, or for pre-election years. The S & P 500 was oversold by some short-term measures, such as fewer than 15% of S & P 500 stocks sitting above their 10-day average price. That makes sense for sure, though it has meant that the equal-weighted S & P 500 is up only 1% this year and has tentatively broken a multiyear uptrend, while small-cap stocks are suffering worse still. And even for the market-cap-weighted S & P 500, the forward P/E is down from nearly 20 to 18 since late July, as prices have fallen, and analysts' forecasts have continued to plod higher.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, as was Osama bin Laden himself. We, the victims’ family members, have been trying to hold these terrorists accountable in court since Sept. 11, 2001. Saudi Arabia has hidden behind sovereign immunity for all these years, and we have been stymied in court because the evidence against the alleged perpetrators is mostly classified. This works to the benefit of Saudi Arabia and works against the victims. Before any defense agreements with Saudi Arabia are ever reached, shouldn’t we first be allowed to hold the kingdom accountable for what occurred on the fateful day of 9/11?

Not that there isn’t plenty to praise in “Here Lies Love,” the immersive disco-bio-musical about Imelda Marcos that opened on Thursday at the Broadway Theater. Because the real star of this show is the astonishing architectural transformation of the theater itself, by the set designer David Korins. That she would probably adore the over-emphatic atmosphere of “Here Lies Love” — with its lurid lighting by Justin Townsend, skittering projections by Peter Nigrini and earsplitting sound by M.L. For here we are, at the place where irony and meta-messaging form a theatrical-historical knot that can’t be picked apart. Which is why, as you clap, you should probably wonder what for.

TUNIS, June 17 (Reuters) - A Tunisian judge has barred radio and television news programmes from covering the cases of prominent opposition figures accused of conspiring against state security in recent months, official news agency TAP said on Saturday. "The investigating judge of office 36 of the anti-terrorism branch issues a decision banning media coverage of the two cases of conspiring against state security," the court's spokesperson Hanan el-Qadas told TAP. Judges have detained or opened investigations into more than 20 political, judicial, media and business figures with opposition ties over recent months, accusing some of plotting against state security. The main opposition parties have decried the arrests as politically motivated and rights groups have urged Tunisian authorities to free those detained. Saied has denied staging a coup, saying his actions were legal and needed to save Tunisia from chaos and corruption.
