Seoul, South Korea CNN —A South Korean man has been sentenced to jail for using artificial intelligence to generate exploitative images of children, the first case of its kind in the country as courts around the world encounter the use of new technologies in creating abusive sexual content. He had created about 360 AI-generated images in April, the prosecutor’s office told CNN. Prosecutors argued during the case that the definition of sexually exploitative material should include descriptions of sexual behaviors by “virtual humans” and not just the appearance of actual children. For years, deepfakes – highly convincing fake videos made using AI – have been used to put women’s faces into often aggressive pornographic videos, without their consent. The videos often appear so real it can be hard for female victims to deny it isn’t really them.

But some of the country's wealthiest people are already feeling worse off. The Wall Street Journal coined the term "richsession" to describe an economic slump that hits the rich harder. Get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in business, from Wall Street to Silicon Valley — delivered daily. There is a different kind of economic slump on the horizon – a so-called "richsession". Wall Street Journal reporter Justin Lahart coined that term at the start of this year to refer to a downturn that disproportionately impacts some of the country's wealthiest people.

Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg remain at each others' throats following the launch of Threads. The squabble has ramped up a notch after Twitter threatened to take Meta to court over Threads. It's getting a bit pitiful for Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg as their feud continues to escalate, following the launch of Threads. In Musk's case, Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino should bring a level-headedness that her colleague is clearly lacking. These include hashtags, a "following" feed, and a messaging function, which means Threads is still a skeletal project.

On Sunday, Mark Zuckerberg – still stinging from his botched metaverse launch – unveiled Meta Verified, a new subscription service costing $12 on web and $15 on iOS and Android. The timing of the launches of Meta's and Twitter's subscription services seems to be no coincidence, then: They're introducing paid-for services at a time when they're being squeezed of digital ad revenue. Meta says its new subscription service is primarily for content creators, but this feels disingenuous because everyone on its service is, in effect, a "content creator." Charging for it illustrates a clear misunderstanding Zuckerberg has of Facebook and its users: Facebook is responsible for vetting who gets access to its platform, not users themselves. Just 0.2% of Twitter users in the US had signed up for Twitter Blue, Musk's subscription service, by the end of January.
NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Meta Platforms (META.O) is the tale of two companies, tied together only by their potential to sell advertising and their owner Mark Zuckerberg. But cash flow from Meta’s operations alone – mostly the business without spending on the metaverse – would represent a yield of 15%. That’s three times the free cash flow yield of consumer giant Procter & Gamble (PG.N), and more than oil major Exxon Mobil (XOM.N), which had a banner 2022. Rather than make Meta shareholders collectively pay for Zuckerberg’s ambitions, he could fund them himself through dividends from the parent company. If Meta were smaller, or the metaverse were a separate company, it might not attract the same attention.
