Here, Freeman and Sharghi share some common awkward situations that can disrupt a job interview, and how to recover from them with grace. If you're alerted that your interview will run behind schedule, it's appropriate to remind the recruiter about your own time constraints. "It all boils down to communication and being transparent with the recruiter," Sharghi says. Your phone goes offIn 99% of cases, if your phone goes off mid-interview, don't answer it, Freeman says. The interviewer is giving you zero energySometimes you may feel you're giving your most high-energy, best first impression, but you're getting little positive feedback from your interviewer, Freeman says.

Journal Editorial Report: The week’s best and worst from Kim Strassel, Kyle Peterson, Mary O'Grady and Dan Henninger. Images: AP/AFP/Getty Images/Reuters/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyThings have gone from bad to worse in Germany this week after a court ruling that’s forcing the government to do something truly shocking: level with voters about how much the net-zero energy transition will cost. Please pass the smelling salts. The country’s highest constitutional court ruled this month that one of the coalition government’s main gimmicks for funding green projects violates Germany’s version of a balanced-budged amendment. That amendment, known as the debt brake, caps the government’s fiscal deficit at 0.35% of gross domestic product per year except in emergencies (as defined by special legislation passed with a majority in the Bundestag).

"I think the entire Taiwan semiconductor industry - in our essence, in our R&D and manufacturing, and in our global layout - will undergo a comprehensive improvement and transformation." Key to the development of the industry is stable and renewable energy, Hou, the chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association, told its annual meeting in the chip hub of Hsinchu. Last month, the association made four key appeals to the government, among them the stable supply of green energy, as Taiwan's chip industry aims to seize the AI opportunity, Hou said. In 2021, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) said it aimed to reach net zero emissions by 2050, matching a government target set that year by President Tsai Ing-wen. GlobalWafers (6488.TWO) CEO Doris Hsu told reporters that while AI will be a key driver of rapid growth in the next decade, Taiwan's chip industry faces several pressures as it grows.

A bronze seal for the Department of the Treasury is shown at the U.S. Treasury building in Washington, U.S., January 20, 2023. The "45L" tax credit for energy efficient homes acquired from 2023 through 2032 ranges from $500 to $5,000 per dwelling, with the homes meeting lesser Energy Star efficient appliance standards qualifying for the low end, and those meeting Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home requirements qualifying for the maximum. To meet the Zero Energy Ready Home requirements, the dwellings must meet certain requirements for insulation, duct work, appliances and other features that make it "so energy efficient that a renewable energy system could offset most or all the home's annual energy use," according to the Department of Energy. The homes must be certified by third parties to verify that they meet the requirements, the Treasury said. For homes acquired before 2023, the credit amount is $1,000 or $2,000 depending on the standards met.

Sprawling across 43,500 square meters (468,000 square feet), it is now Asia’s largest timber building, by floor area. Some countries now even allow for high-rises (or “plyscrapers”), like Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s 25-story Ascent, which at 284 feet, is the world’s tallest mass timber structure. Advocates for mass timber point to the relatively slow and predictable rate at which the material burns. Many of the purported benefits of mass timber are, however, environmental. If a tree is then turned into mass timber, this embodied carbon is sequestered, or “locked in,” rather than being returned to the atmosphere.

But retrofitting an over one-hundred-year-old structure into a eco-friendly building seemed like too much to hope for. But by 2020, he and his wife, Megan Milligan, had fully converted their home to net-zero, producing so much solar energy that their yearly electricity bill dropped from $1,100 to $285.
When Ryan Shanahan, 41, decided to buy a house in Portland, Oregon, he knew from the start that he wanted his future home to be "net zero." To be net zero is to cut greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions reabsorbed from the atmosphere, by oceans and forests, for instance, according to the United Nations. "My mantra is that the future is efficient, electric, and renewable," Shanahan tells CNBC Make It. To buy the house, Shanahan took advantage of a $15,000 forgivable loan from Oregon's Down Payment Assistance program. Shanahan purchased the house because it had design features needed to help reach his goal of making the house net zero.
Sheets of copper cathode are pictured at BHP Billiton's Escondida, the world's biggest copper mine, in Antofagasta, northern Chile March 31, 2008. Ivan Alvarado | ReutersAlong with experiencing a short-term supply shortage, copper is set to undergo a "generational shift" in demand as decarbonization ramps up, according to BNY Mellon Lead Portfolio Manager Al Chu. Short-term supply issues have also emerged alongside a rebound in demand, such as an eruption of protests in Peru, which accounts for 10% of the world's copper supply. Every renewable energy pretty much needs copper, because if you're talking about electrifying something and transmitting electricity, you need copper." "When you look at the long-term secular story, you can just see strong demand.
Greenpeace activists used ropes to climb aboard a ship carrying a Shell oil platform. Four activists have been aboard the vessel in a protest against climate devastation for five days. Climate activists on the Shell oil platform. The company said the protest was a safety concern, given the "number of people boarding a moving vessel in rough conditions." The activists, however, are experienced climbers who have "undergone thorough training to take part in this action," a Greenpeace spokesperson said, adding they take safety "very seriously."
LONDON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Britain must review its refusal to grant development consent for a high-voltage undersea power cable project linking Britain and France, London's High Court ruled on Tuesday. A government spokesperson said: "The UK Government is disappointed by the outcome but we will be considering the judgment carefully before deciding next steps." After requesting further information, Kwarteng last year decided that Aquind had given "insufficient consideration" to an alternative connection point in Dorset in southern England, which Aquind had previously rejected. However, the High Court ruled that it was "irrational" for Kwarteng to refuse Aquind’s application without making further inquiries about the feasibility of the location in Dorset. REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Oct 27 (Reuters) - TerraPower LLC, Bill Gates' advanced nuclear reactor company, and power company PacifiCorp said on Thursday they will undertake a study to evaluate deploying up to five additional Natrium reactors in the U.S. West by 2035. The Wyoming Natrium reactor, being developed by TerraPower and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, will get about half of its funding from the U.S. government. The joint study on the additional reactors will evaluate the potential for advanced reactors to be located near current fossil-fueled generation sites, enabling PacifiCorp to repurpose existing power generation and transmission assets in California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho, the companies said. Some nonproliferation experts say the more highly enriched fuel expected to be used by advanced reactors could become an attractive target for militants looking to convert it for use in a crude nuclear weapon. Advanced reactor proponents say the plants are safer and create less waste.
