GUWAHATI/NEW DELHI, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Twenty-three Indian troops were reported missing on Wednesday after a flash flood caused by a cloudburst in the northeastern state of Sikkim, a defence spokesperson said. The rain lashed a valley about 150 km (93 miles) north of Gangtok, the state capital, located along the border with China. Rising water submerged some vehicles following the release of water from a dam, the spokesperson added. Intermittent rain and thundershowers were hampering rescue operations in the area, an army official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Indefinite curfew had to be implemented in Imphal and in some other districts," L. Kailun, a senior police official based in the state capital, told Reuters. He added that the situation was "extremely tense" after armed mobs vandalised an office of the ruling political party and hurled petrol bombs at two police sites. More than half the state's population of 3.2 million belongs to the Meitei community, while the Kuki community, who make up about 43%, live mostly in the hills. Protests re-ignited over the alleged kidnapping and killing of two students of the Meitei community who had gone missing in July, after their bodies were found this week. Leaders of the opposition Congress party have accused the Modi government of failing to control the violence in a state governed by his nationalist party.

GUWAHATI, India, Aug 23 (Reuters) - A railway bridge being built in India collapsed on Wednesday killing at least 26 workers and injuring two, police said, as the state-run railway authority opened an investigation. The accident happened in Sairang town in the northeastern state of Mizoram, its chief minister, Zoramthanga, said on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Media reported that up to 40 workers were at the site when the bridge collapsed but police said 28 workers were present. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said in a statement on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that the mishap occurred during work on the Bhairbi-Sairang New Line Railway Project. In October last year, a colonial-era suspension bridge collapsed in the western state of Gujarat killing 135 people.

GUWAHATI, India, June 18 (Reuters) - Indian authorities said on Sunday they had started to relax a curfew imposed in violence-hit Manipur after 45 days of civil unrest in the north-east state, seeking to reduce anger spilling onto the streets and restore normalcy. Meiteis, the dominant community in the low lands of the state, who account for half of state's population, demand extension of limited affirmative action quotas to them. But Kukis fear it would mean Meiteis would get a greater share in education and government jobs reserved for them. "We believe that if the prime minister takes action, then peace in Manipur can be restored in 24 hours," said Nimaichand Luwang, an opposition lawmaker in Manipur. A senior home ministry official in New Delhi said at least 32,000 security forces will continue to support local police until normalcy is restored.
