Union organizing failed with 56% of the vote, or 2,642 workers, casting ballots against the UAW, according to the NLRB, which oversaw the election. More than 90% of the 5,075 eligible Mercedes-Benz workers voted in the election, according to the results. If no objections are filed, the election result will be certified, and the union will have to wait one year to file for a union election for a similar bargaining unit.

Stellantis provided a glimmer of hope for a breakthrough by giving the union a new contract proposal. It was not clear whether the Stellantis offer would satisfy union President Shawn Fain, who vows to announce new strike targets on Friday unless there is “serious progress” toward agreements with GM, Stellantis and Ford. So far UAW workers are striking at just three factories — one for each company, including a GM assembly plant near St. Louis. The workers are covered under a different contract than those that UAW is negotiating with the three big automakers. If ratified, it would cover more than 5,000 workers and provide a model for similar deals at GM and Stellantis operations in Canada.

When shipments are detained, CBP provides the importer with a list of examples of products from previous reviews and the kind of documentation required to prove they are not made with forced labor, CBP told Reuters. "The timing of these changes does not reflect any specific changes in strategy or operations," a CBP spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the list of eight product types was "not exhaustive." In a report to Congress last month on UFLPA enforcement, CBP listed lithium-ion batteries, tires, "and other automobile components" among the "potential risk areas" it was monitoring. While the supply chain is shifting away from parts, the total powertrain part supply pie is also shrinking. While automakers bring more of their supply chain in-house, there are thousands of parts in cars that come from companies all over the world — a branching supply chain of firms each dependent on the success of the others. BERLIN, July 24 (Reuters) - Taiwan's Foxconn (2317.TW) will acquire a 50% stake in ZF Group's (ZFF.UL) axle system assembly unit, creating a joint venture aimed at growing automotive and supply chain opportunities, the companies said on Monday. The joint venture with Foxconn is part of ZF's strategy to grow specific business areas beyond current limits with external partners' support, the German company's chief executive, Holger Klein, told Reuters. "This business can grow very quickly, but it has relatively low margins. It needs fresh capital," which is why ZF had been looking for a partner, said Klein. The joint venture agreement is expected to become effective within six to nine months of signing pending regulatory approvals.

The EU law would require all new cars sold from 2035 to have zero CO2 emissions, making it effectively impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered cars.
