US President Joe Biden (L) and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) meet in Tel Aviv, Israel on October 18, 2023. "The relationship [between Biden and Netanyahu] is absolutely terrible." A report by Politico in early February cited unnamed Biden administration officials describing the president calling Netanyahu a "bad f—ng guy." Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz (L) meets US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, at the US Capitol on March 05, 2024. Gantz reportedly faced a barrage of harsh questions and critiques from the administration over Israel's handling of the Gaza war.

Israel’s military leadership faced heightened public scrutiny this week after a string of damaging revelations in the Israeli media and The New York Times suggested that senior officers had ignored or dismissed intelligence reports about the likelihood of a major Hamas attack. A commander also dismissed a subordinate’s warning in July that the group was running drills and building the capacity to set the plan in motion. The news raised expectations among political commentators that, after the war ends, senior military and security chiefs will either resign or be fired over the intelligence failures. While the war is still going, many Israelis are also focused on maintaining a united front against Hamas. A survey conducted in mid-October found that 87 percent of Jewish Israelis interviewed said they trusted the Israeli military, slightly higher than in June.

By Rami AmichayGEZER, Israel (Reuters) - Family and friends of Vivian Silver, a prominent Canadian Israeli peace activist, commemorated her life on Thursday, two days after authorities confirmed she had been killed by Hamas militants on Oct. 7. She had moved to Israel from Canada in 1974 and was a founding member of Women Wage Peace that campaigns for peace between Israel and Palestinians. "Not only I ... was orphaned, your many friends were orphaned, the country that you adopted at a young age, and a movement was orphaned, the movement of peace," her son Yonatan Zeigen told mourners at the outdoor ceremony. Militants killed around 1,200 people on Oct. 7 and kidnapped around 240 others, according to an Israeli tally. Women Wage Peace said Silver was a pivotal member of the group and had pushed the Israeli government to seek a political solution to its long-standing conflict with Palestinians.

More than 1,200 people in Israel died, most of them in the Hamas attack, and about 240 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by Palestinian militants. The army said Tuesday that it has captured Gaza’s legislature building, the Hamas police headquarters and a compound housing Hamas’ military intelligence headquarters. Israeli news sites showed pictures of Israeli soldiers hoisting the Israeli national flag and military flags in some of the buildings. The Israeli military did not give a reason for her death, while Hamas said she was killed in an Israeli strike. On Nov. 5, the Israeli military struck a car on the road between the southern Lebanese towns of Ainata and Aitaroun.

The bands symbolize solidarity with the roughly 240 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. It’s a feeling that cuts across the deep divisions within Israeli society: the world does not understand us. In the early days after the Hamas terror attack, many of the hostages’ families were reluctant to criticize the government of Netanyahu. Public displays of solidarity with Gaza or criticism of Israel’s military response are few and far between. “This conflict (between Israel and the Palestinians) isn’t black and white, but this war (with Hamas) is,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the mother and daughter were abducted by Hamas while they were staying at Kibbutz Nahal Oz. Israelis are still reeling from the Hamas assault and from images of fellow citizens being bundled off to Gaza, which is ruled by Hamas. An attempt to rescue all those Hamas said were now held in different locations could jeopardise their lives. American and British officials said they have been working with Qatar to secure the release of hostages, including their citizens, held in Gaza. Israel has also said that there will be no end to its full blockade of the enclave unless Israeli hostages are freed.

Yonatan Manor, president of Boston University Students for Israel, said failure to denounce Hamas was akin to supporting Nazis. Younger Americans are much less likely than older generations to support Israel. Support for Israel has grown among all Americans since 2014, when clashes between Israel and Hamas led to thousands of deaths, the vast majority Palestinians. One member, a Middle Eastern Jewish student at Barnard College who requested anonymity for safety concerns, said the organization's ethos underscores the conflict's complexity. Raffi Ivker, a Jewish student at George Washington University, said he believed neither side "has clean hands."

But when Israel called up its reservists and declared war this week, the response was swift and overwhelming. Most reservists were already in Israel at the time of the call-up - the largest such compulsory mobilisation since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. But many were out of the country, for a variety of reasons, and dropped everything to rush back. "I cannot sit here and study medicine while I know that my friends are fighting and my family needs protection. A former captain in the Israeli army, he immediately acknowledged the call-up, but didn't tell his children what he was doing.

In addition, thousands of troops have been deployed in southern Israel next to Gaza, which Israeli forces withdrew from in 2005. Trying to rescue all those Hamas said were now held in different locations could jeopardise their lives. Yet, protracted negotiations with Hamas over a prisoner swap would be a huge win for an arch foe of Israel. Within 24 hours, 11 Israelis, five Palestinians and a German policeman were dead after a rescue effort erupted into gunfire. Netanyahu could follow a more familiar strategy of assassinating Hamas leaders with air strikes and bombs.

The Department of Justice has seized $450 million worth of Robinhood shares held by Sam Bankman-Fried and Gary Wang. The roughly 55 million shares are owned by the two via a holding company, and have been the focus of an ownership dispute. In a recent court filing, the Justice Department said the Robinhood shares "constitute property involved in violations" such as money laundering and wire fraud. BlockFi, which is also in the middle of its own bankruptcy case, is arguing that the Robinhood stock should be in their possession. BlockFi sued Bankman-Fried for the Robinhood shares in November, saying a $1 billion pledge by Alameda Research to secure loan obligations included the stake.
Sam Bankman-Fried's Robinhood shares are set to be seized by US authorities, an attorney said Wednesday. Bankman-Fried, FTX's new bosses, bankrupt crypto lender BlockFi and FTX creditor Yonatan Ben Shimon have all laid claim to the Robinhood stake, per a December 22 court filing. Bankman-Fried disclosed a 7.6% stake in Robinhood in May, acquiring 56.3 million shares in the trading platform for $648 million through an Antigua-based holding company called Emergent Fidelity Technologies. Robinhood shares traded at $8.36 as of Wednesday's closing bell – meaning that Emergent's position is now worth just over $470 million. People know when they have Covid symptoms, but do minor sniffles at the end of a coronavirus infection, for example, mean they’re still contagious? It’s a good time to brush up on what scientists know, and still don’t know, about how long people remain infectious with viral diseases — Covid, influenza, RSV — that are spreading across the U.S.How long am I contagious with Covid? If you’ve been exposed to someone who has tested positive for Covid, symptoms from any of the omicron subvariants generally appear two to four days later. How contagious you are is connected to how much of the virus, known as the viral load, is in your body. As far as relying on Covid tests to determine whether someone is still contagious, PCR tests are good at diagnosing Covid.
