As gold surged this year to its highest price ever, Xena Lin joined the frenzy by making monthly purchases of gold “beans,” pebble-like morsels of the precious metal. For Ms. Lin, a 25-year-old administrative worker in southern China, the $80 beans — small enough to rest on a fingertip and weighing about one-thirtieth of an ounce — were an affordable way to buy into the gold excitement without splurging for jewelry, gold bars or coins. She had dabbled with investing in stocks in the past, but she said buying gold, especially in this fun way, inspired her to continue investing. “I’m still working hard to save more,” Ms. Lin said. But gold’s climb to highs above $2,400 per ounce has proved more resilient, and lasted longer, because of China.

Ally Financial and Bread Financial are among the institutions offering a higher renewal rate for customers who stick around. Consider that about a year ago, the average one-year CD had an APY of less than 1%, according to Bankrate.com . Since the early 2000s, he and his wife, Karen, traveled to New Zealand for vacation. But one other major expense caught them by surprise: bringing along their two dogs, Xena the Warrior Princess and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Jon Kroll"I cannot emphasize enough how important it is, if you plan to bring animals with you, to make that part of your early planning process," Kroll tells CNBC Make It. And it's an expensive process, at that. "But once we retrieved Buffy and Xena from quarantine, our house instantly felt like a home."

Money market funds Assets in retail money market funds grew to $1.99 trillion, according to the latest data from the Investment Company Institute . Further, even as money market funds offer relative safety, they can still face some risk. Don't confuse money market funds with money market accounts. Though money market accounts – which are offered by banks – are protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, up to $250,000, money market funds are not. Certificates of deposit and high-yield savings accounts Liquidity should be a big factor for investors eyeing bank products like CDs and high-yield savings accounts.

Xena Stryker left corporate America several years ago after feeling discriminated against. The company, Xena Design + Marketing Firm, has offices in Atlanta and Beverly Hills, California. At a previous job, I was the only Black woman at an architectural firm with hundreds of designers. I started my own company, Xena Design + Marketing Firm, and life is phenomenal right now. If you're in a similar position as I was previously in corporate America, my advice is: dream big, determine your unique selling point, find a supportive dream team, and get out.

Seven decades ago, Carol Aird and Therese Belivet went on a second date. The film earned six Academy Award nominations and the enduring adoration of queer women the world over, who have dubbed Dec. 21 “Carol Day,” and the holiday season “Carol Season.”One of the best ways to celebrate? ‘Carol’ is that magic for the sapphic community.”Watching “Carol” has also been a holiday tradition for Kaina Dominguez, the founder of The Bush Films, a queer film festival with screenings throughout the year. Queer women-centered site Autostraddle once had a “30 Days of Carol” event, where it posted 30 articles about “Carol” in as many days, and one of its writers also watched “Carol” on a 24-hour endless loop. And then there is ‘Carol,’ braving the tsunamis of ‘business/industry requirements’ and telling the tale of love with sensitivity and honesty.”
