LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by casino mogul Steve Wynn against The Associated Press over a story about two women’s accounts to police alleging he engaged in sexual misconduct. The court cited state anti-SLAPP law in rejecting Wynn's claim that he was defamed in the February 2018 AP article, which cited police documents. It appears the strength in the fourth quarter has carried over into the current (first) quarter in all three locations. Macao We're happy to see the strong top-line performance in both Macao locations, even if Wynn Palace's adjusted EBITDAR came up a tad bit short. Total adjusted EBITDAR of $297 million (Wynn Palace and Wynn Macao added together) represents about 85% of Wynn's pre-Covid fourth quarter 2019 level of $348 million in the Chinese special administrative region. Breaking that down, Wynn Palace was still a bit further ahead in its recovery but Wynn Macao is quickly gaining ground. In 2019, Wynn Macao generated $170 million in fourth quarter adjusted EBITDAR.

New economic data out of China on Wednesday shows the world's second-largest economy is still struggling to bounce back from the pandemic. China's GDP for the last three months of 2023 grew by 5.2%, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. But the latest disappointing economic data puts pressure on policymakers to act again to boost the economy. The 2023 bounce back from Covid-19 restrictions did not go as expected, but we believe the stocks' declines already reflect China headwinds and that the Chinese economy will regain its footing in time. We simply can't sell this casino operator because once it's clear the Chinese economy has stabilized, the stock is going to rally.

Despite these positives, Thursday evening's sell-off brought Wynn stock to about $40 below the level at which was trading in 2019. However, the company's two properties in the region – Wynn Palace and Wynn Macao – are not enjoying an equal pace of recovery. In the third quarter of 2023, Wynn Macao generated about $78 million in profits, which when annualized is only $312 million. The weakness at Wynn Macao has the market concerned Thursday about a loss of market share.

And the global superpower has flashed warning signs in recent days, signaling stocks with exposure to the country could feel pressure. Two resort-and-gambling stocks are less attractive now that the market has better priced in a popular gambling destination's recovery, according to Jefferies. Analyst David Katz downgraded Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts to hold from buy. Katz shaved Las Vegas Sands' price target by $4 to $65, still representing an 11.1% upside from where the stock closed Wednesday. For 2024, he said to expect EBITDA margin growth of 29% for Las Vegas Sands and 52% for Wynn. Outside of Macao, Katz said Las Vegas business should continue to help Wynn, while Singapore is a strong performing area for Las Vegas Sands.
