CNN —Chelsea FC women’s manager Emma Hayes has been named head coach of the US Women’s National Team, the US Soccer Federation announced on Tuesday. She was named 2021’s Best FIFA Women’s Coach and is a finalist for the 2023 award. US Soccer, which reached an equal pay deal with female players in May 2022, said, without offering specifics, that Hayes’ contract makes her the highest paid women’s soccer coach in the world. “We felt strongly that Emma was the best person and coach to take the US Women’s National Team forward,” US Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker said. “I remember being a young coach working my way up through the system in the US and watching all those young girls aspire to play on the US Women’s National Team.

Emma Hayes first met Megan Rapinoe before she was Megan Rapinoe. Or, rather, just as she was becoming Megan Rapinoe. Rapinoe was not even a professional soccer player back then, not quite. In 2008, she had been appointed head coach and director of soccer operations of the Chicago Red Stars, one of the inaugural franchises in the start-up league Women’s Professional Soccer. The Red Stars drafted Rapinoe second overall ahead of the league’s first season.

☆ Independent investigation of US women's professional soccer reveals 'widespread misconduct' by those in positions of power

CNN —The National Women’s Soccer League and its players’ union have released a 128-page independent investigation report following a 14-month inquiry into accusations of “discrimination, harassment, abuse (physical, emotional or sexual) and retaliation” within the women’s professional league. The joint investigative team, which included members from two law firms, found “widespread misconduct directed at NWSL players” by those in positions of power. Following Wednesday’s release of the new report, US Soccer released a statement acknowledging the misconduct which mirrored incidents detailed in the Yates report. Portland Thorns and Timbers owner Merritt Paulson resigned Tuesday as chief executive officer of the two teams, after an unsparing report of abuse in women’s professional soccer included him among the leaders in the sport who had failed to check predatory coaches. Paulson did not address the future of his ownership of the Thorns, one of the most successful teams in the National Women’s Soccer League, or the Timbers, who play in Major League Soccer.
