Live updates: Hunter Biden gun trial
  + stars: | 2024-06-03 | by ( Holmes Lybrand | Marshall Cohen | Kate Grise | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: 1 min
One man was excused from the jury pool after saying that the Donald Trump trial in New York made him think prosecutors charge cases based on politics. He had also said he might not be able to judge the Hunter Biden case fairly because some of his loved ones are struggling with addiction. A woman in the jury pool told the judge that she is a bartender and has periodically served Hunter’s uncle at the bar. Another woman was excluded from serving on the jury after saying she had a negative view of the Biden family. Both sides agreed that she shouldn’t be eligible to serve on the case.

Henry Jarecki, and Christine Corcoran attend the Annual Freedom Award Benefit Event hosted by International Rescue Committee on November 5, 2014 in New York City. A woman who says she was a sexual abuse victim of Jeffrey Epstein filed a lawsuit Monday against the famed psychiatrist, entrepreneur and commodities trader Henry Jarecki, alleging that Jarecki raped and sex trafficked her after Epstein sent her for psychiatric treatment. Epstein allegedly sent Jarecki other young women for the psychiatrist to "treat" confidentially, in order "to avoid unwanted attention on Epstein's sexual abuse of these young women," the suit alleges. The complaint, which refers to the woman as "Jane Doe 11," says Jarecki "repeatedly raped" her beginning in 2011 until December 2014. "Dr. Jarecki never engaged in any abusive conduct with the complainant or any other person," Kedia said.

Born in Mexico City in 1962, she has two children and one grandchild. In 2018, she became the head of government of Mexico City, the first woman elected to this position. Current and former US officials have frequently described the relationship between President Joe Biden and Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador as friendly and professional — and anticipate a productive relationship with Mexico’s next president. But Mexico’s election also comes at a critical time for the Biden administration. One of the considerations in rolling out a new border executive action was doing so after Mexico’s election.

A woman drove up to a Minnesota home in a Mazda on Sunday night with a bag of cash totaling $120,000, ready to hand it to one of the 12 jurors in a multimillion-dollar charitable fraud case in the Minneapolis federal courthouse. “This is for Juror 52,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson quoted the woman saying, according to a story in the Sahan Journal. The U.S. attorney’s office said in an interview with The New York Times that the accounts were accurate and that more details would be forthcoming. Prosecutors said the juror reported the apparent bribery attempt to the local police. Prosecutors have accused them — and dozens of others — of stealing $250 million by claiming to have served nonexistent meals to nonexistent children.

The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur
  + stars: | 2024-06-03 | by ( Dakin Campbell | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +45 min
On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."

The presidential election in the United States this year is, yet again, a contest between two men. But in Latin America, as Mexico’s milestone election showed over the weekend, electing a woman as president has become remarkably routine. Claudia Sheinbaum, who won Mexico’s election in a landslide against another female candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez, joins at least a dozen other women who have served as presidents of Latin American countries since the 1970s. This growing list includes past leaders of two of Latin America’s largest countries, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina, and those in smaller nations like Violeta Chamorro of Nicaragua and Xiomara Castro, the current president of Honduras. The ascension of women to such heights spotlights how some democracies in Latin America that emerged from the ashes of authoritarian rule have proven exceptionally open to tearing down barriers to political representation.

CNN —Mexico is set to elect its first female president, with preliminary results showing Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s former mayor and climate scientist, is on track to win the country’s largest election in history. The 61-year-old rode the wave of popularity of her longtime political ally, the outgoing leftist Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and their Morena party. Not only is she set to be Mexico’s first female president, Sheinbaum will also be the country’s first leader of Jewish heritage, although she rarely speaks publicly about her personal background and has governed as a secular leftist. Supporters of Claudia Sheinbaum celebrate during an election rally in Mexico City on June 2, 2024. If the court validates the election, Sheinbaum will take office on October 1.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s list of accolades is long: She has a Ph.D in energy engineering, participated in a United Nations panel of climate scientists awarded a Nobel Peace Prize and governed the capital, one of the largest cities in the hemisphere. On Sunday, she added another achievement to her résumé: becoming the first woman elected president of Mexico. Ms. Sheinbaum, 61, captured at least 58 percent of the vote in a landmark election on Sunday that featured two women competing for the nation’s highest office — a groundbreaking contest in a country long known for a culture of machismo and rampant violence against women. Now that she has clinched the presidency, Ms. Sheinbaum’s next hurdle will be stepping out of the shadow of her predecessor and longtime mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the outgoing president.

Mexico elected its first Jewish president over the weekend, a remarkable step in a country with one of the world’s largest Catholic populations. Yet if it is a watershed moment for Mexico, it has been overshadowed by another one: President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum will also be the first woman to lead the country. Before the water tanker rolled into one of New Delhi’s largest slums, Arvind Kumar was pacing between the gate of a public school and a tea seller’s stall hundreds of yards from his home, where he lives with nine members of his family. “There, it is coming,” Mr. Kumar shouted to a woman waiting on the slum’s edge. With their last stored drops now spent, and a heat wave searing the city, the two neighbors had decided to make sure the truck reached its destination. The woman boarded the 5,000-gallon tanker and guided its driver through a tight lane, past houses lined with thousands of jerrycans, many chained in place, and onto a stony plateau.

When your kid comes out as trans, here’s what to do

CNN spoke with a doctor, gender rights activists and parents of trans children about what to say when a child comes out as transgender, how to address certain challenges and what receiving gender-affirming care is like. Some parents want to support their child but worry if their gender identity is the result of a phase, or if they’ll change their mind later. It would be their decision resulting from the exploration of their gender identity, rather than someone trying to control it for them.
