Hopping from one mid-six-figure salary job in Big Tech to the next? More tech workers get laid offOver the last 18 months, tech workers say it's felt difficult to stay employed as round after round of layoffs have swept Big Tech and the broader industry. The tech job market got tougherTo add insult to injury, keeping a job in tech isn’t the only thing that’s more difficult. Aline Lerner, a former tech engineer and founder of interviewing.io, a site for tech recruiting and mock interviewing for tech job seekers, said it's now much more difficult to land a tech job, particularly at a high-profile or Big Tech company. “Anecdotally, I’d say it’s the hardest it’s been to get a tech job since probably the dot-com bust," Lerner said.

Top AI researchers have been leaving for startups where their work can have more impact. That frustration over Google's slow movement has been corroborated by other former Google researchers who spoke to Insider. Niki Parmar left Google Brain after five years to serve as a cofounder and CTO of Adept, though in November, she left to found a stealth startup. Lukasz Kaiser left Google Brain after working there for more than seven years to join OpenAI in 2021. Sharan Narang, another contributor to the T5 paper, left Google Brain in 2022 after four years there.

Kate Brandt has been working since 2015 to make Google’s operations and products more sustainable and was named its chief sustainability officer in 2018. Early in her career, Brandt worked on climate and energy in the White House, the Pentagon and the Energy Department during the Obama administration. I kind of teared up and felt really excited to see this momentous occurrence in the climate movement. We’re going to see more and more opportunities—whether that’s for governments, for businesses, for nonprofits and NGOs—to use AI to really accelerate their climate work. Google’s total carbon footprint increased last year—what happened?

John Paolo Canton , 40, head of communications at Polestar (an electric-vehicle brand recently launched by Volvo Cars), who lives in San Francisco, on his 1968 Porsche 912, as told to A.J. In 2005, I met a new friend named Pete at the Road America racetrack in Wisconsin. He had a Ducati dealership and was involved in racing, and I worked with racing motorcycles. On the day I met him, he had this Porsche 912 with him. He had restored the car and painted it a strawberry-red that was highly unusual, not just for a Porsche, but for any car.
But there's one group, almost unnoticed in the midst of the online firestorm, that has been cheering Musk on from the sidelines: other tech executives. To some founders, Musk is simply a monstrous version of the executive they wish they could be. Musk is getting rid of perks like free meals in the Twitter cafeteria — and other tech executives are taking note. Musk's slash-and-burn approach gives tech executives cover for making unpopular decisions. But now, as tech companies cut back to prepare for a recession, the "rough waters out there" have forced his staff to "reevaluate" their demands.
