Novak Djokovic takes the U.S. Open title at age 36

(Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)Novak Djokovic won the U.S. Open men's final Sunday, cementing his place as one of the sport's greatest players and fortifying his status as the athlete with its most men's Grand Slam titles. At 36, Djokovic is retirement age in professional tennis. The win may have been redemption for the champion, who lost to Medvedev in the 2021 U.S. Open final. That Russian thwarted Djokovic's attempt to take all four major championships in a calendar year, a rare feat last accomplished in men's open competition by Rod Laver in 1969. That French Open title was the 23rd major singles title for Djokovic, breaking a tie with long-time rival Rafael Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles.

Marketa Vondrousova came to the All England Club a year ago unable to play tennis at all. Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon on Saturday, coming back in each set for a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur in the final. Following the match, King greeted Vondrousova with a hug and told her: "First unseeded ever. 6 Jabeur, Vondrousova kept falling slightly behind. Another miscue gave Vondrousova a break point, and Jabeur gifted that with yet another shot into the net.

"Maybe some people think that it would be a huge relief for me winning Roland Garros, being the only men's tennis player with 23 slams. Alcaraz admitted that the stress and tension of facing Djokovic brought on the debilitating cramps that ruined his chances of winning that showdown just five weeks ago. Djokovic, locked at 1-1 in their head-to-head record, was looking forward to the challenge too. We're both playing well," added Djokovic as he looks to become the oldest man in the Open Era to win the grasscourt major. Djokovic leads despite Hurkacz ace barrage
  + stars: | 2023-07-09 | by ( Martyn Herman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Hurkacz rocketed down 23 aces including one clocked at 141mph -- the fastest serve of the tournament so far. Djokovic will sleep a lot easier than he might have done if the 17th seed Hurkacz had taken the opening set after two aces saw him to 6-3 in the tiebreak. Djokovic won both his points on serve to close the gap and then returned a Hurkacz howitzer and the Pole could only roll a forehand into the net. This time Hurkacz's spinning volley crept over and Djokovic almost fell over the net as he missed the put-away. Another tiebreak arrived and Hurkacz won a stunning baseline rally to save a set point but two points later he sent a forehand out to hand Djokovic a two-set lead.

Chilean Jarry stole a set and threatened to snatch another before the world number one moved into the fourth round with a 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3 7-5 victory on Centre Court. Every match that I win on Centre Court is better for me to get into this court, this atmosphere," he told reporters. "As I said, last year it was really tough for me to play first match in the Centre Court. Every match that I didn't play on that court, I feel, as I said, that I belong to that court." "I watched a lot of videos, a lot of matches from legends playing on that beautiful court," he said.

Djokovic beats Wawrinka just before closing time

[1/4] Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 7, 2023 Serbia's Novak Djokovic celebrates winning his third round match against Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka REUTERS/Andrew CouldridgeLONDON, July 7 (Reuters) - Stan Wawrinka said he stood no chance of beating Novak Djokovic in their Wimbledon third-round clash on Friday and the Swiss's prediction proved spot on as he was outplayed on Centre Court. His 31st consecutive match win at Wimbledon sent him into the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the 61st time in which he will face Poland's 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz. "He was two points away from extending the match for another day," Djokovic said on court. With the Centre Court roof closed and the lights on, Djokovic took the second set in half an hour. With the clock ticking towards cut-off point, the same one that had snagged Andy Murray's charge against Stefanos Tsitsipas the previous evening, Djokovic finally looked less invincible.

Tsitsipas ends Murray's hopes with comeback win
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The 24-year-old Greek trailed by two sets to one after twice Wimbledon champion Murray edged ahead in three tight sets on Thursday night before Wimbledon's curfew halted play mid-battle. Errors began to come from his racket and Tsitsipas sensed his moment with a break in the third game -- the first time he had taken Murray's serve in the match. Tsitsipas forged 5-3 ahead but Murray hung in to test the Greek's nerve. Two match points went begging but at the third time of asking an ace ended Murray's dream. It was a very difficult game and I'm impressed how well he holds up after his hip surgeries and his level today," Tsitsipas said.

"I feel like I'm ready to play more matches, to play more great matches on that court," U.S. Open champion Alcaraz said after reaching the third round. "It would be amazing to play a final here in Wimbledon. British hopes were further dashed as American Christopher Eubanks claimed the biggest win of his career by stunning 12th seed Cameron Norrie 6-3 3-6 6-2 7-6(3) on Court One. Twice former champion Petra Kvitova cruised into the third round after the ninth seed brushed aside Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2 6-2. Last year's quarter-finalist Jannik Sinner of Italy, seeded eighth, recovered from a poor start to beat Frenchman Quentin Halys 3-6 6-2 6-3 6-4, while Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev downed Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-3 7-6(5).

Pairing a steel resolve with his fabled metal hip, the 36-year-old was allowing British tennis fans to dream. Middle-aged men in well-tailored suits jumped to their feet, revealing flamboyant cufflinks as they pumped their fists to celebrate winning shots. Women clapped hands above their heads, beseeching Murray -- the man who, a decade ago, had ended the 77-year wait for a British Wimbledon champion -- to finish off his youthful rival and write another chapter. Disappointment drenched the arena, tempered with admiration for the Scottish warrior who has done so much for British tennis. When asked how confident he was that he would be competing at Wimbledon next year, Murray said: "I don't know.

I think it was a good match," Sinner said in his on-court interview. Sinner cruised from there on, using both serve and forehand to devastating effect as he controlled rallies from the baseline and frustrated Schwartzman, winning five straight games as errors crept into the Argentine's game. "I tried to return as many balls as I could and I tried to play my game. Moving him around is not easy because he is so fast, so I tried to overpower him a little bit. Burrage, who accumulated only eight points in the first set, dropped her first service game with a double fault and served another to hand Kasatkina the first set.
