Representative Hakeem Jeffries and other members of New York’s congressional delegation have called for swift impeachment of President Trump. “A second impeachment, only days before President Trump will leave office, is as unnecessary as it is inflammatory,” the lawmakers wrote. If the House did impeach, and the Senate put Mr. Trump on trial, at least 17 Republicans would most likely have to join the Democrats to win a conviction. Senator Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, said President Trump had effectively “disqualified himself” from ever running for office again.

The U.S. attorney in Washington initially refused to rule out investigating Mr. Trump’s role in the riot. The deadly storming of the Capitol by Mr. Trump’s supporters transformed the politics of Washington in ways that were still hard to measure. The December call to the investigator, like the call Mr. Trump made to Mr. Raffensperger, was recorded, the official said. Mr. Trump had pressured Mr. Pence publicly and privately to overturn the certifications and throw them back to the states so that Mr. Trump could try to undo results in states that Mr. Biden won. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The news conference on a Friday afternoon in March was brief and opaque. The Louisville police chief said officers serving a drug warrant at an apartment had been met with gunfire. An officer had been shot and a woman had been killed, the chief said, and a man inside had been charged with trying to murder a police officer. When a reporter asked about the bullet holes that riddled the woman’s sliding door and window, the news conference abruptly ended. Ms. Taylor, awakened from sleep, had died in the hallway outside her bedroom.

Columbus Police Kill Black Man Weeks After Protests Against Brutality

A police officer fatally shot a Black man early Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, three weeks after a county sheriff’s deputy killed a Black man in the state capital, which ignited a round of protests against police brutality. “Our community is exhausted,” Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said during a news conference. Though the Columbus officer did not have his body camera turned on during the shooting, a violation of department policy, the police’s body cameras are equipped with a feature that starts recording 60 seconds before they are turned on. When the officer did turn on his camera, the playback feature captured the shooting. The footage, which the mayor said he expected would be released on Wednesday, did not capture audio, so any verbal exchange before the gunfire was not recorded.

Dr. Biron Baker runs a family medicine clinic in Bismarck, N.D. Every day patients walk through the door, and any number of them could be sick with the coronavirus. Dr. Baker treats them anyway, doing the best he can with his small staff to keep from getting sick. But as the first vaccine rolls out for frontline health workers across the country this week, Dr. Baker and his staff are so far not among those scheduled to receive it — and they do not know when their turn will come. In the scramble to vaccinate millions of health workers, difficult choices about who comes first — and who must wait — have started to surface. Workers treating Covid-19 patients in intensive care units and in emergency departments have in recent days been beaming symbols of the virus’s demise.

Some commuters may end up working from home permanently; others may abandon public transit if cuts cause service to deteriorate. “This is existential peril,” said Ben Fried, a spokesman for TransitCenter, an advocacy group.
