Milan CNN —There are few things more synonymous with Italy in spring and summer than its beaches. Pines, agaves, the scents of salt and resin were inspiration for designer Massimo Giorgetti at MSGM as the label celebrated their 15th anniversary. “This collection speaks of encounters — ‘icontri’ — between the city and the beach and among people who love life,” said Napoli-born De Sarno. Actor Paul Mescal — a known fan of the short short — was sat front row at the Gucci Men's Spring-Summer 2025 show. On a balmy spring morning, after a breakfast of coffee and plain yogurt at a luxury Manhattan hotel, Jaap van Zweden grabbed his bag of conducting batons and scores by Mozart and Gubaidulina and set out for Lincoln Center through the wilds of Central Park. “I love the air, I love the trees,” he said. “Everybody can do whatever they want here. This is freedom, absolute freedom.”Van Zweden, 63, will leave the New York Philharmonic this summer after six seasons as its music director, the shortest tenure of any maestro since Pierre Boulez, the eminent French composer and conductor who led the Philharmonic in the 1970s. But throughout his tenure, van Zweden, an intense, exacting maestro from Amsterdam, faced persistent questions about whether he had the star power, creative drive and strong connection to New York needed to lead the Philharmonic.

They Shoot Owls in California, Don’t They?

Barred owls have also emerged as a threat to the California spotted owl, a closely related subspecies in the Sierra Nevada and the mountains of coastal and Southern California. In the wilds of British Columbia, the northern spotted owl has vanished; only one, a female, remains. If the trend continues, the northern spotted owl could become the first owl subspecies in the United States to go extinct. In a last-ditch effort to rescue the northern spotted owl from oblivion and protect the California spotted owl population, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed culling a staggering number of barred owls across a swath of 11 to 14 million acres in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, where barred owls — which the agency regards as invasive — are encroaching.

And at an expo in 2006, the fate of the titis turned for the better when the Vargas family walked in. His father wasn’t delusional, he believes. It would be more than 40 years before Kerr felt compelled to speak about that evening in the hospital room. Flaco spent a year defying expectations, an owl born into captivity who quickly learned to hunt and fend for himself in the wilds of New York City. Did he hit a window that he failed to perceive as glass, like hundreds of millions of birds across the United States each year? Or was he compromised in some way that impeded his ability to navigate New York’s concrete canyons? His initial examination, performed Friday by the Wild Bird Fund, a rescue group, showed a contusion on his chest and an impact to his right eye. He may have been dead by the time he hit the ground, said Rita McMahon, the group’s director.

Pjetar Nikac has been the superintendent at 267 West 89th Street, an eight-story apartment building near Riverside Park, for 30 years. Someone had cut open the mesh on his enclosure in an act of vandalism that remains unsolved. Now, Flaco had apparently crashed into the building. Although he was still alive when Mr. Nikac found him and, with Alan Drogin, a birder and building resident, rushed to get him help, Flaco was soon pronounced dead. He was taken to the Bronx Zoo for a necropsy that will determine why he died.

Under cover of darkness a year ago Friday, someone breached a waist-high fence and slipped into the Central Park Zoo. The break-in happened steps from the shared headquarters of the New York City Parks Department and the Central Park Zoo, in the vicinity of at least one surveillance camera. Since the zoo suspended efforts to re-capture Flaco in February 2023, there has been no public information about the crime. Lion attacks: How to stay safe on safaris in Africa

It was July of 2022, and the co-founder of Discover Africa Safaris was out in the bush near the Khwai River in northern Botswana. African lions are fully capable of attacking, killing and even eating humans, and it’s generally estimated about 250 people a year die in lion attacks. WLDavies/E+/Getty ImagesOnly about 23,000 lions remain in sub-Saharan Africa, found mostly in Eastern and Southern Africa, Muruthi said. Before your trip, It's important to study up on safety tips -- such as remaining inside your safari vehicle when lions and other wild animals approach. Secondly, fleeing indicates to the lion you’re frightened and now possible prey, turning what might have initially been a mock charge to test you into a real attack.

New Yorkers above a certain age remember the old Times Square. Peep shows, adult bookstores and live sex shows stretched on for block after block. When I started my freshman year at a college in Nashville, the city’s Lower Broadway was a miniature version of Times Square. Lower Broadway is so packed with tourists that locals steer clear — not because it is debauched but because it is just so darn crowded. And we can use our successes in Times Square, Lower Broadway and elsewhere as a conceptual legal model for reforming these virtual public spaces.

The US Air Force has begun retiring the A-10, an aircraft famed for its role in close air support. Indeed, the US Air Force is finally retiring the aging A-10 Warthog ground-attack aircraft, which a top official has said "doesn't scare" China. According to Pentagon's budget request for 2024, the Air Force is looking to cut its TACP force by more than 40% over the next three years. If the plan goes ahead, the Air Force TACP community will have a little over 2,100 positions for officers, enlisted troops, and civilian personnel in 2025, down from the 3,700 slots it has currently, a spokesman told Air Force Times. "I think the military is getting ready for a war where we won't have air dominance," a former Air Force Combat Controller told Insider.

Sixty-plus feet of red carpet and 24 steps was the gauntlet guests had to run — or walk — as the Cannes Film Festival began. That’s 60-plus feet to make an entrance, create a lasting moment, catch the eyes of the watching world. The red carpet is the show before the screening(s), and every year the crystals seem to get brighter, the skirts frothier, the accessories more dramatic. Whether it’s Fan Bingbing with tigers gamboling over the wilds of her gown, Uma Thurman in sweeping cardinal satin or Helen Mirren with hair dyed to match her ice-blue dress, there’s no denying part of the fun of the festival lies in the fashion follies before the films. (Now repeat that 10 times fast.)
An endangered vulture was found dead at the Dallas Zoo over the weekend with an "unusual wound," facility officials said Monday — the third suspicious incident there in less than two weeks. It isn’t clear whether the death of Pin, a 35-year-old lappet-faced vulture, is linked to the earlier incidents. The zoo said in a statement Monday it asked Dallas police to investigate and did not comment further. Dallas Zoo via NBC Dallas-Fort WorthThe zoo said that in the past 10 days, it had “substantially” increased security measures, including limiting access to outdoor enclosures and adding cameras and overnight guards. "Given the recent incidents at the Zoo, we alerted the Dallas Police Department," the post said.
BALTIMORE — A judge on Monday vacated the murder conviction of Adnan Syed, years after the hit podcast “Serial” chronicled his case and cast doubt on his role in the slaying of former girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Trial prosecutors did not properly turn over evidence to defense lawyers that could have helped them show someone else killed Lee, Phinn said. Judge Phinn gave the state 30 days to decide whether to seek a new trial or potentially stop the case. "I was kind of blindsided," Lee told the court. After Syed, now 42, was sentenced to life behind bars in 2000, his case gained national notoriety from the 2014 podcast "Serial."
