The Summary Studies have found that wildfire smoke negatively affects brain health. “A lot of the research on wildfire smoke has historically focused on our lungs and our hearts,” said Stephanie Cleland, an assistant professor at Simon Fraser University who studies the health impacts of wildfire smoke. Scientists think the reason wildfire smoke affects the brain is that the tiny particles within it can cross the barrier between the bloodstream and the brain, causing inflammation in the central nervous system. Other research published the same year showed that exposure to wildfire smoke during the school year reduced students’ test scores relative to a year with no smoke. “Last summer completely changed our conversation around who’s exposed to wildfire smoke,” she said.

The doll, also called Nahneetis, is just one of some 1,800 items museum officials say they’re reviewing as they work to comply with the requirements while also eyeing a broader overhaul of the more than half-century-old exhibits. CNN —A routine part of the job for Southwest Airlines flight attendants is turning into a dangerous mess as a searing summer heat and the airline’s beverage management practices have made soda cans volatile mid-flight. There were more than 100 reports of soda cans exploding on flights in June, Southwest flight attendant union president Bill Bernal told CNN, some of which have injured flight attendants. Southwest Airlines wouldn’t comment on the number of incidents and injuries or their nature, but confirmed to CNN the issue is occurring. “Both the short term and long term fixes are actual engineered fixes that should eventually all but eradicate the exploding can issue at Southwest Airlines,” Bernal said. Soda cans are engineered and designed to handle reaching a pressure level between three to six times the can’s normal pressure, according to Biberdorf.

Hong Kong CNN —China’s top diplomat Wang Yi has had a busy week in which two devastating conflicts have loomed large. Kuleba’s visit was the first time in the nearly 29 months of Russia’s war on Ukraine that a high-level Ukrainian official has visited China. Official statements from Beijing and Kyiv after Wednesday’s Wang-Kuleba talks gave no indication that the Ukrainian diplomat had swayed Beijing toward Kyiv’s vision for peace. Observers say Beijing could, at some point, play a role in any potential future talks, but is unlikely to shift its relationship with Russia. But it was met with some skepticism from observers in the region given the failure of past attempts at unity.

The wildfires burning in the northwestern United States and western Canada triggered air quality warnings across both countries on Wednesday, as smoke spread over a region thousands of people have fled from. Thousands of firefighters and emergency personnel have been deployed in the region. The growing blazes have raised fears of a repeat of last year, when record wildfires in Canada blanketed cities as far south as Florida with dangerous smoke and haze. There were 40 active wildfires, none of which were under control, in Oregon and Washington covering more than 870,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Many fires are exhibiting “extreme fire behavior,” the center said.
