Whereas the first book sets up conventions and rules for magic, the second breaks them, but haphazardly, messily, in the service of chaotic plot engineering. The Britishness of “Her Majesty’s Royal Coven” was rooted in West Yorkshire and was part of the novel’s confident charm; “The Shadow Cabinet” has the more imperial cast of shallow tourism.

One Facebook user (here) uploaded an image of text which reads: “If you ever find yourself dialling 999 and you can't speak press 55 and they can track where you are from dialling location - new technology. However, multiple British constabularies say on their websites that dialling 55 during a silent 999 call would not allow the police to track someone’s whereabouts (e.g., Metropolitan Police: here, West Yorkshire Police: here and West Midlands Police: here) or automatically send officers to that location. More information about the police’s ‘Silent Solution’ can be found here. Dialling 55 during a silent 999 call lets call operators know that someone is in danger and needs help, though it does not allow the emergency services to track a caller’s location.

She’s a contemporary knight errant, upholding a code of decency against the terrors of modern life. “Happy Valley,” whose final season premieres on Monday (streaming on Acorn TV and AMC+, broadcast on BBC America), is a pocket-size, prosaic saga — a hero’s tale contained in three six-episode seasons and embedded in a family drama. Like all mythical heroes, Cawood has an antagonist, the psychopathic rapist and killer Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), who is the father of her grandson. In its structure, “Happy Valley” is very much a traditional British crime series, with seemingly unconnected plot strands and investigations that wind themselves together against a backdrop of cop-shop politics. In the new season’s major subplot, a less-than-sympathetic female character is caught between two seemingly more capable men whose weaknesses run deeper than hers.

The police said they had arrested a 20-year-old man on Friday "in connection with the incident and enquiries remain ongoing". "West Yorkshire Police have advised Leeds United that Elland Road can reopen, effective immediately. We apologise for any inconvenience and we thank the public for their support," the Premier League club said in a statement. Leeds, who are 14th in the Premier League, return to action after the international break when they travel to leaders Arsenal on April 1.
