Falaise is one of three 100-year-old mansions open to tour at Sands Point Preserve on Long Island. Falaise was built by Harry Guggenheim in 1923 and was modeled on a 13th-century French manor. Inside Sands Point, there are four mansions. In September, I visited Sands Point to see Falaise, the most mysterious of the three — tours are only available on weekends and you can only get there via Sands Point's transportation. On a 91-degree day in June, a group of 20- and 30-somethings in sundresses and Bermuda shorts was navigating a dimly lit cocktail lounge whose air-conditioning was on the fritz. It didn’t matter: Cocktails with names like the Ghost Writer were flowing, and patrons were posing in front of a velvet emerald curtain, holding “Team Daisy” and “Team Gatsby” hand fans emblazoned with the faces of Eva Noblezada and Jeremy Jordan, the stars of the Broadway musical “The Great Gatsby.”Flickering candles adorned tables at the side of the room, where people colored in silhouettes of the character Myrtle Wilson, a social climber in the musical, and filled out trivia sheets with questions like “Is Gatsby in East or West Egg?” Silver gift bags filled with miniature bottles of Champagne and “Old Sport” stickers sat on a table by the door. “We are in the Gatsby era,” said Francis Dominic, 31, a lifestyle and travel influencer, alluding to the Broadway musical and “Gatsby,” another high-profile stage adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel that last week ended its run at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., and is also aiming for Broadway.

One such mansion is Hempstead House, which is located in Sands Point Preserve, a 216-acre park about 30 miles outside New York City. The Guggenheims lived in Hempstead House together until 1930, when Daniel died. In July 2024, I paid $15 to park at Sands Point Preserve and then another $10 to take a guided tour of Hempstead House. Here's what it was like inside the 112-year-old mansion and what I learned about life there.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” requires no critical endorsement. His slim 1925 novel still takes up permanent residence in the book bags of students across the nation. “The Great Gatsby,” now playing at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J., replicates its literary prototype. Jay Gatsby (Jeremy Jordan) is the elusive seigneur of a mansion in West Egg, a fictional Long Island town. Though the musical remains largely faithful to that plot, Kait Kerrigan, the book writer, takes liberties with the point of view.

Real estate investor Peter Keane-Rivera recently got into short-term vacation rentals. After nearly five and a half years of doing long-term rentals, Seattle-based property owner Peter Keane-Rivera is experimenting with short-term vacation rentals via Airbnb. "He said, 'you'll pretty much double the rent on a long-term rental unit if you convert it to a short-term vacation rental,'" Keane-Rivera, who works full-time at a large aerospace manufacturer in the Seattle area, told Insider. While that may have been true when his mentor was listing Airbnbs, vacation rental bookings started slowing down in 2022 and hosts started worrying about what was coined 'Airbnbust.' After looking through listings of other Airbnbs in the Seattle area and evaluating his competition, Keane-Rivera settled on creating a 70s-themed space.

Egg prices in some states doubled in December, compared with the same month in 2021, according to data from Instacart. Even so, the highest prices for a dozen eggs were in other states, such as Hawaii and Florida. Egg prices increased the most in upper Midwestern states year-over-year in December, according to Instacart. In 2019, chickens on its farms produced just over 17 billion eggs, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Despite the increases, states like Iowa still had some of the lowest egg prices in the US.
