Lesley Hazleton, a British-born, secular Jewish psychologist turned journalist and author, whose curiosity about faith and religion led her to write biographies of Muhammad, Mary and Jezebel and examine her own passions in books about agnosticism and automobiles, died on April 29 at her home, a houseboat in Seattle. She was 78. Ms. Hazleton announced her death herself, in an email that she scheduled to be sent to friends after she died. She had been diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer and chose to take her own life, as Washington State’s Death with Dignity Act allowed her to do legally, with the assistance of hospice volunteers. “Yes, this is a goodbye letter,” she wrote, “which is difficult for me, because as many of you know, I’m lousy at saying goodbye.”

Ohio’s certification deadline is August 7 and Alabama’s is August 15. The Biden campaign has called on Ohio and Alabama officials to follow past precedent. The Biden campaign has insisted that it “will be on the ballot in all 50 states.”It has proposed several options. Ohio and Alabama could push back their deadlines or accept provisional certifications that would be confirmed after the conventions – as Alabama did in 2020 for Republicans. In Alabama, Democratic lawmakers in the state House and state Senate introduced legislation Thursday to push back the certification deadline to August 23.

I think I had five jobs because they just weren’t working for what was going on in my personal life,” Koelsch told me. Now, she works four days from home, one day in the office, and her life is manageable. Remote work, and Washington State’s paid family and medical leave program, will make having another kid possible for her. One was the negative effect of the increased volatility and outrageous expense of child care (which I wrote about on Wednesday). I’ve seen a fair number of headlines over the past few years like this one, “WFH Goes From New Path to Dead End for Working Mothers,” and this one, “‘You Are Mommy Tracked to the Billionth Degree,’” suggesting that for ambitious moms, working from home is a mistake.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington state attorney general announced a $149.5 million settlement Wednesday with drugmaker Johnson & Johnson, more than four years after the state sued the company over its role fueling the opioid addiction crisis. If approved, the deal would send over $20 million more to respond to the opioid crisis than if the state had signed onto a national settlement in 2021 involving Johnson & Johnson, the attorney general’s office said. Washington state’s Democratic attorney general sued Johnson & Johnson in 2020, alleging that it helped drive the pharmaceutical industry’s expansion of prescription opioids. “The Company’s actions relating to the marketing and promotion of important prescription opioid medications were appropriate and responsible,” according to the statement. The attorney general’s office noted that the company was one of the largest suppliers of the raw narcotic materials needed to produce opioid drugs.

New York CNN —Drivers in the state of Washington are celebrating the official start of summer with an unwelcome sight: America’s most expensive gas prices. Prior to the past few days, Washington has never been the most expensive state for gas in data going back to 2005, GasBuddy told CNN. Even though Washington has the highest average price, gas stations near major California cities are still charging heavily for gas. Washington state’s average gas price is nearly $2 a gallon above that of America’s cheapest state for fuel: Mississippi, where gas prices average $3.01 a gallon. No state has enjoyed a bigger plunge in gas prices than Delaware, where the state average is down by $1.61 a gallon over the past year, according to AAA.

Public unions and progressives have tried for years to overturn Washington State’s ban on income taxes. And on Friday they finally succeeded as the state Supreme Court upheld a new 7% tax on capital gains. Washingtonians can look forward to a future of higher taxes on property and investment. Washington has a provision in its state constitution requiring uniform taxes on property. Decades of precedent in the Washington courts have defined income as property, thereby preventing lawmakers from imposing income taxes without amending their constitution.
