Iranians will go to the polls against the backdrop of a battered economy, widespread popular discontent and harsh crackdowns on dissent. Iran is also dealing with high inflation, heavy Western sanctions, mounting tensions with the U.S., ramped-up Iranian nuclear enrichment and the Israel-Hamas war. On issues of foreign policy and war, the Iranian president wields some influence and is the country's public-facing messenger. But power and critical decision-making in Iran ultimately lies with the supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, and unelected institutions like the Revolutionary Guards. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei speaks with media after casting his ballot during the Iranian Parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections at the Leadership office in Tehran, Iran, on March 1, 2024.

As the nation continues to grapple with the opioid epidemic, the Sackler family had agreed to pay $6 billion to families and states as part of an agreement to wind down Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin. In exchange, the Sackler family would be immunized from future civil liability claims. Those supporting the bankruptcy argued the yearslong process had gone on long enough and was unlikely to yield additional money from the Sackler family. The vast majority of known current opioid victims and their families supported the agreement. But the Justice Department said it was a raw deal for victims – particularly potential future victims.

Since its inconclusive 2006 war with the Lebanese militant group, Israel has been planning for a re-match. In the event of war, full-scale war, both sides will be able to inflict significant pain on the other. In the entire 34-day war of 2006 Hezbollah is estimated to have fired around 4,000 rockets – a daily average of 117. The bank took the unusual step of issuing a press release minutes before midnight ET to disclose its response to the Fed's findings. JPMorgan said that the Fed's projections for a measure called "other comprehensive income" — which represents revenues, expenses and losses that are excluded from net income — "appears to be too large." Under the Fed's table of projected revenue, income and losses though 2026, JPMorgan was assigned $13 billion in OCI, more than any of the 31 lenders in this year's test. It also estimated that the bank would face roughly $107 billion in loan, investment and trading losses in that scenario. "Should the Firm's analysis be correct, the resulting stress losses would be modestly higher than those disclosed by the Federal Reserve," the bank said.

Renton, Washington CNN —The missing paperwork on the 737 Max that lost a door plug on an Alaska Airlines flight in January isn’t just making it difficult to find out who made the near tragic mistake. It was already well known that no documentation was found to show who worked on the door plug. Without the bolts, the door plug incident was pretty much inevitable. Removing a door plug after a plane arrives from Spirit AeroSystems rarely happens, Lund added, so no one was aware the door plug needed attention. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy has testified about the missing paperwork at Congressional hearings since then.

People line up to get into the U.S. Supreme Court on the day where decisions ares expected to be handed down, in Washington, U.S., June 26, 2024. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday put new limits on the power of the Securities and Exchange Commission to enforce securities laws — the latest ruling in a series of cases that take aim at federal agencies. The court ruled 6-3 that adjudication of cases by in-house judges violates the right to trial by jury. The challenge zeroed in on how the SEC enforces securities laws, including those prohibiting insider trading. A three-judge panel of the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled against the agency, prompting the SEC to ask the Supreme Court to intervene.

A group of doctors join abortion rights supporters at a rally outside the Supreme Court on April 24, 2024 in Washington, DC. The court dismissed an appeal brought by Idaho officials, meaning a lower court ruling that allows doctors in the state to perform abortions in emergency situations remains in effect for now. The legislation, known as the Defense of Life Act, went into effect in 2022 when the Supreme Court rolled back Roe. The Supreme Court in January allowed Idaho to enforce the provisions while agreeing to hear oral arguments in the case. The emergency room dispute is one of two abortion cases the Supreme Court considered this term, both of which arose in the aftermath of the 2022 decision to overturn Roe.

CNN —President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, are set to make history on CNN Thursday night as they meet for their first 2024 debate. Thursday’s debate will be the earliest in the election cycle that a presidential debate featuring the major parties’ nominees has taken place in modern history. That’s why Trump’s advisers and allies have urged the former president to focus on issues like the economy, crime and inflation as he debates Biden. The Biden campaign knows all this, of course, so it will be interesting – and instructive – to hear his message and analyze where it’s being targeted. The Trump campaign distanced itself, in part, from the plan, noting that the advisers who wrote it are not on the payroll.

A police officer in a Seattle suburb was found guilty on Thursday in the 2019 shooting death of a man outside a convenience store, the first such conviction under a Washington State law making it easier to hold the police accountable for the unjustified use of deadly force. A jury found the officer, Jeffrey Nelson, guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree assault for the killing of Jesse Sarey, 26, during an arrest on a disorderly-conduct charge outside Sunshine Grocery in Auburn, Wash., on May 31, 2019. Mr. Sarey’s mother, Kari Sarey Hart, and his younger brother, Torell Sarey, died as the case wound its way through the legal system, said Elaine Simons, 64, who was a foster mother to the brothers. Mr. Sarey’s mother and family fled Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime. “Neither of them got to be here today, except spiritually, for this kind of justice,” she said of Mr. Sarey’s mother and brother.
