Soft landing the U.S. economy is like an economic nirvana: inflation is low and the job market is strong. WSJ’s Nick Timiraos explains why and how the Federal Reserve is trying to make one happen. Photo illustration: Ryan TrefesProfits are growing again, and the Federal Reserve looks as if it will start cutting rates sometime this year. It is an unusual combination and, for the stock market, possibly a potent one. It is early days still, but the rebound in profits that began in the third quarter looks poised to continue.

November’s existing home sales increased for the first time in six months and prices rose for the fifth straight month. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin digs into the details of the November sales report. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—A government-controlled mortgage giant has a plan that could help more Americans save around $1,000 on closing a mortgage, the latest attempt to chip away at high costs that officials say discourage home buying. Fannie Mae last month said it would expand the types of mortgages it will purchase that rely on a cheaper alternative to title insurance, which is one of the biggest fixed costs tied to closing a mortgage.

Wael Sawan, Shell’s chief executive, says in an interview with WSJ’s Jenny Strasburg at Davos that the company’s decision today to suspend shipping in the Red Sea is affecting costs. British oil major Shell suspended all shipments through the Red Sea after U.S. and U.K. strikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebels triggered fears of further escalation, according to people familiar with the decision. The West’s targeting of the Iranian-ally militia came after the Houthis launched dozens of missiles and drones at commercial vessels around the Red Sea and the nearby Bab el-Mandeb. The militia has said the attacks are in response to an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Beneath Gaza, a labyrinth of tunnels used by Hamas has complicated Israel’s ground offensive in the Palestinian enclave. WSJ’s Rory Jones—who visited the tunnels in 2014—explains the unique challenge they pose for Israel. Photo: Yousef Mohammed/Zuma PressWASHINGTON—Israel has assembled a system of large pumps it could use to flood Hamas’s vast network of tunnels under the Gaza Strip with seawater, a tactic that could destroy the tunnels and drive the fighters from their underground refuge but also threaten Gaza’s water supply, U.S. officials said. The Israel Defense Forces finished assembling large seawater pumps roughly one mile north of the Al-Shati refugee camp around the middle of last month. Each of at least five pumps can draw water from the Mediterranean Sea and move thousands of cubic meters of water per hour into the tunnels, flooding them within weeks.

China’s Economy Faces a Sour End to the Year

China’s slowing economy could soon become a major talking point for U.S. companies as they begin to report third-quarter earnings. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin explains. Illustration: Elizabeth Smelov<br>SINGAPORE—A brief rebound in China’s struggling economy showed worrying new signs of flickering out, heaping pressure on Beijing to take bolder steps to rev up growth. Factory activity slid deeper into contraction in November as domestic and foreign orders dried up, while, in an ominous sign for consumer spending, activity in the services sector shrank for the first time this year, according to business surveys released Thursday. Only construction registered any expansion compared with the previous month as government spending on infrastructure increased.

Where Will CD Rates Go in 2024?
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Mallika Mitra | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +7 min
Interest rates that banks pay on certificates of deposit are closely tied to short-term interest rates set by the Federal Reserve. Now that the inflation rate has come down, many investing pros see two possible outcomes for interest rates in 2024: one in which the Fed has little choice but to cut rates steeply, and another in which the Fed can cut rates modestly. Either scenario would eventually result in CD rates decreasing, since rates on CDs tend to quickly follow Fed moves. Where will CD rates go in 2024? But if investors are correct that rate cuts are coming, those high CD rates will come down over the next few years, too.

The Price Is Wrong for Housing

October’s existing home sales report details the current state of the all-important U.S. housing market and how Americans reacted to mortgage rates that have declined, but still remain much higher than they have been in more than a decade. Photo:Lower rates would make U.S. houses more affordable, just not affordable enough. The pandemic set off a flurry of demand for housing. Americans’ newfound desire for space, the padding of U.S. household finances from government relief checks, and sub-3% mortgage rates were a potent mix that sent home prices skyward. Now the buying frenzy has passed and, with mortgage rates at their highest levels in over 20 years, not many homes are getting sold at all.
