CNN —The legal team representing the alleged victims of the former owner of Harrods, Mohamed Al Fayed, say the late billionaire was a “monster” whose crimes were “enabled” by the high-end department store. Armstrong said Al-Fayad was a “monster” who committed a “vast web of abuse.”Setting out the legal claim being brought against Harrods, Armstrong said Al-Fayad was “enabled by a system” that pervaded the store. “This is and was a systematic failure of corporate responsibility, and that systematic failure is on the shoulders of Harrods,” Armstrong said. The legal team involved in the BBC investigation claimed Harrods knew of Al Fayed’s alleged crimes. Al Fayed’s son, Dodi Fayed, died in 1997 along with Princess Diana in a high-speed car crash in Paris.

London CNN —The European Union will loan Ukraine up to €35 billion ($39 billion) to help rebuild its economy, the bloc’s executive arm announced Friday. Western nations froze Russia’s assets in bank accounts located in Europe and the United States as part of a massive wave of sanctions enacted after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Von der Leyen’s visit to Kyiv comes just as the winter heating season starts in Ukraine. Russia’s bombardments targeted at the country’s energy infrastructure have intensified in recent months, leaving Ukrainians vulnerable to power outages. On Thursday, the International Energy Agency said this coming winter will be the “sternest test yet” for Ukraine’s energy system.

Kraków was full of well-preserved history. We were also fascinated with Rome's ancient history during our Italian vacation, but Kraków surprised us with an incredible mix of older and newer sites. As Luc explained on the episode, the city is special because it remained relatively unscathed during World War II. It's one of the best-preserved cities in Europe, with a charming old town square and an enchanting Jewish quarter. Kraków was also an important place for us to learn more about modern history, including visiting Schindler's Factory and paying respects at nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau.
