And right now, the presidential campaigns’ dollars are talking about the “blue wall” — and about defining Kamala Harris. But there’s an equal amount of contrast spots, as well as positive ads telling the affirmative case for Harris. Pennsylvania is drawing far and away the most ad spending this month, from both parties. While Pennsylvania drew almost 20% of Democratic presidential ad spending and 11% of Republican spending over this period in 2020, it’s drawing more than a quarter of each party’s spending this year. Meanwhile, a longtime swing state, Iowa, has ceased to be a main battleground — with a resulting drop in ad spending.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania took the stage at Wissahickon High School in the Philadelphia suburbs on Monday to the roars of his fellow Democrats, a campaign appearance and an audition all in one. As he enthusiastically shouted out his support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, the pro-Palestinian demonstrators who had dogged Democratic politicians last spring were nowhere in evidence. There was only the adoration of an audience from his native Montgomery County, which the Democratic ticket must carry by sizable margins in November to win Pennsylvania. But as Ms. Harris prepares to name her running mate ahead of a rally on Tuesday in Philadelphia, those protests are very much part of the calculus surrounding Mr. Shapiro, who is believed to be on her shortlist of potential running mates. An effort by a motley group of left-wing and pro-Palestinian activists to derail his nomination has presented the Harris campaign with a decision as the vice president prepares to make one of most significant choices of her career: Should she take the opportunity to stand up to her far-left flank in an appeal to the center of the party and to independents, or should she shy away from inflaming an issue that has divided and bedeviled the party — Israel’s war in Gaza?

Just before a gunman fired at Donald J. Trump at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday, we concluded a new set of New York Times/Siena College polls of Pennsylvania and Virginia. While the polls were completed before the shooting, they still offer context about the state of the race. Five years ago, Joe Biden was the “electability” candidate — the well-liked, moderate Democrat who promised to beat Donald J. Trump and had the poll numbers to back it up. The polls don’t back up President Biden’s electability case anymore. In this morning’s latest New York Times/Siena College polls, he trails by three percentage points among likely voters in must-win Pennsylvania, while he leads by a mere three points in Virginia — a state he carried by 10 points four years ago.

Forty-three seconds after the first shot was fired, a Secret Service agent said the shooter was down. Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump is covered by U.S. Secret Service agents at a campaign rally on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania. McCormick was whisked into the venue through a private entrance manned by members of the Secret Service. “This is a big crowd — this is a big, big, beautiful crowd,” Trump said at the start of his speech. Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesCrooks had climbed onto the flat rooftop of a light beige, single-story commercial building roughly 150 yards to the north of the rally stage.

‘I’m sure he’ll be prepared’“I say he’ll come out all jacked up, right?” Mr. Trump said, referring to Mr. Biden. Moments later, Mr. Trump, who has previously demanded Mr. Biden take a drug test before their debate, seemed to accuse Mr. Biden of using illegal drugs. He said Mr. Biden had done little to curb inflation and derided his energy and environmental policies, which Mr. Trump said are raising the cost of goods. Mr. Trump also said Mr. Biden had done little at the border. Mr. Biden campaigns frequently in the city, and its metropolitan area was critical to helping him win Pennsylvania by about 80,000 votes in 2020.

Deal making runs into presidential politicsPresident Biden holds talks on Wednesday for Fumio Kishida, Japan’s prime minister, part of a state visit designed to show the U.S.’s commitment to a staunch ally. Despite the pomp and ceremony, the presidential election will loom over the meetings, with Biden’s opposition to Nippon Steel’s bid for U.S. Steel showing how the chase for votes is affecting deal making and economic policy. The summit will be just the fifth state visit of his administration, and reflects a different approach to that of his predecessor, Donald Trump. Both Biden and Trump have courted union workers, notably during the auto industry strike last year. Biden is the first sitting president to visit a picket line.

Over the course of several days, The Associated Press interviewed a cross section of voters in Northampton County to ask whether Biden's messaging around the fate of democracy was resonating. These voters represented parts of the very coalition Biden will need to win Pennsylvania again — Black voters, Latinos, independents and moderates from both parties. A Biden campaign spokesperson said the democracy message is central to the campaign but it is not the only one the campaign will use to reach voters. Getting Black voters engaged is going to take more from Biden, she believes, because so far his campaign messages have not resonated. But Lopez thinks messages of fear and Trump imperiling American democracy are essentially meaningless for many of the county's working class voters.

"Obviously, he's a candidate who has completely united the grassroots," a national Republican strategist, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss the candidacy, said. In a background call with reporters, a McCormick campaign strategist said the candidate "will address" those concerns "head on and directly." And the McCormick campaign strategist said the candidate will enter the race with the support of each Republican member of Pennsylvania's congressional delegation. "Dave McCormick has done a remarkable job of unifying the grassroots in Pennsylvania," Montana Sen. Steve Daines, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said in a statement. "His ability to unite both the grassroots and the establishment is extremely impressive," the national Republican strategist said.

Republicans weighing 2024 Senate bids in key states haven't settled on Donald Trump for 2024. "As Senate Republican's primary dynamics get messier by the day, Senate GOP candidates are in a lose-lose situation when it comes to Trump," said Nora Keefe, a spokesperson for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Representatives for the three GOP prospects and the Senate GOP campaign arm either did not elaborate or respond when asked for comment. Rep. Mike Gallagher, a potential Senate candidate in another battleground state, Wisconsin, has repeatedly said he would not support Trump since the Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in the January 6 insurrection. I stand by what I said," he said during an Axios forum when asked if he would support Trump if he becomes the nominee.
The first was Democrat Wes Moore, who beat Republican Dan Cox, becoming Maryland’s first Black governor, and only the third Black governor in the country. Black female candidates hoped to make history across gender and racial lines in several states, from Rep. Val Demings and Aramis Ayala in Florida to Chelsea Clark in Ohio and several women bidding to be the country’s first Black female governor. Although many of these key races ended in upsets for the Black female Democratic candidates, some states have ushered in new progressive representation. And in Massachusetts, Democrat Andrea Campbell beat out Republican Jay McMahon to become the state’s first Black female attorney general. “What we just saw in the midterms is that these Black women were able to inspire multiracial coalitions that enabled their wins.
"I can go down the list and check things: incumbency, check Wild; inflation, check Scheller; district reconfiguration, check Scheller; abortion issue, check Wild." The Pennsylvania Senate race is also hotly contestedWith the Republican Toomey retiring, CNN projected Pennsylvania could flip; NPR agreed, saying it's the "most likely Senate seat to change hands." Chen said that Oz is "continuing to close on" Fetterman, though, because Pennsylvania voters, "especially in the Lehigh Valley, are willing to split their tickets." That poll showed 34% of surveyed voters listed inflation as their most important issue in the election, followed by 28% of surveyed voters who named abortion. "Those are all issues that if we don't maintain a United States Senate, control of the United States Senate, I think this country could be really in danger," Halma said.
A Republican is going to win the Alaska Senate race, but that hasn’t stopped Mitch McConnell from plowing millions of dollars into the deep-red state. Herschel Walker, the Senate candidate in Georgia backed by both Trump and McConnell, also says he would back McConnell. Apart from Tshibaka, Senate Republican candidate Don Bolduc in New Hampshire has said he would vote against McConnell for leader. (The Republican senator who requested anonymity voiced surprise at McConnell’s prediction and thought it betrayed some nervousness on his part. Although he voted to acquit Trump, McConnell called him “practically and morally responsible” for the assault on the Capitol.
Mehmet Oz, US Republican Senate candidate for Pennsylvania, speaks during a campaign event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US, on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022. Two PACs, American Crossroads and the Faith and Power PAC, are respectively pouring $3 million and $3.2 million into Pennsylvania. Both groups are linked to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The spending, first reported by Politico, will fund ads beginning Tuesday that will last through Election Day on Nov. 8, a spokesman for the Senate Leadership Fund told CNBC. It also came days after the Senate Leadership Fund abruptly canceled millions of dollars it had reserved in another Senate race in New Hampshire.
The Oz campaign says he’s residing there while the nearby home he bought for $3.1 million in December of last year is renovated. Doctor Oz and Lisa pay rent while their other home in Bryn Athyn is being renovated. John Fetterman bought his house for a dollar from his sister, and receives rent money from his mom and dad. Doctor Oz has had a real job. John Fetterman’s only job appears to be trying to release convicted murderers onto the streets.”Fetterman has also gone after Oz for owning multiple homes outside of Pennsylvania.
