The fee turned up in September 2019, after Trump placed 25% tariffs on steel, and hasn’t gone away since. So far, the tariffs in force under both White Houses have cost Americans $79 billion, the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimated this summer. The nation’s roughly 33 million small businesses employ nearly half the nation’s workers and generate more than 43% of the gross domestic product, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates. “Whether we like it or not, Asia is the bike manufacturing hub of the world,” said Zagata, who raised prices by between 18% and 22% after the Trump tariffs took hold. San Diego-based entrepreneur Nichole MacDonald said profit margins for her patented, 10-pocket Sash Bag have been thinning in recent years as material and freight costs have jumped, and tariffs aren’t helping.

The fee turned up in September 2019, after Trump placed 25% tariffs on steel, and hasn't gone away since. On a night out in July 2017, Wilson Payamps was playing wingman for a friend who thought Cameron Hall Kirk was cute. Mr. Payamps approached Mr. Kirk on behalf of his female friend. But Mr. Kirk threw a wrench in that plan by informing Mr. Payamps that he was gay. “I put all my cards on the table right away,” Mr. Payamps said. Mr. Kirk, who was 23 at the time and had just graduated from High Point University in North Carolina with a bachelor’s in business, struggled with dating.

But the Newcomers Football Club, an impromptu team made up of asylum-seekers, has helped provide him with a joy that erases his stress. And they were looking for a place to play soccer – an almost universal cornerstone of their daily routines back home. Leonard had never worked with refugees or asylum-seekers before, and he had never played soccer. In the months since, the ad-hoc project has ballooned from an informal pick-up game to an organized club that competes with other New York teams, joining forces with another similar project started by co-organizer Avram Kline. The mixed practices help Newcomers FC members meet new people and practice their English, Leonard says.

The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. It’s the second time the vice president will visit the city this week after campaigning with Biden on Labor Day.

At the CIA's covert training facility near Williamsburg, Virginia, commonly called "The Farm," recruits are trained in the world of espionage and the many ways to get people to provide secret information. "We are in the head-hunting business, as we call it," Olson said. "We have to find individuals that we can induce to cooperate equally with us to give us their secrets." After Klyushin was arrested in Switzerland by U.S. authorities, one of the claims his lawyer made was that American intelligence officers had attempted to recruit Klyushin as a spy for the U.S. upon meeting him for the first time. However, as Olson explained to Javers, the way that intelligence officials approach that process is far different, something that he called "the recruitment cycle."

On a recent Friday at Daphne’s, a new Italian restaurant in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, the red sauce was green, made from chartreuse-colored tomatoes and a splash of vodka. The lasagna came in the form of noodles fried into chips, broken over a dish of beef tartare topped with shoyu-cured egg yolk. There was a Milanese cutlet, but its crisp carapace swaddled swordfish, not veal. And the booths were neither rustic and wooden nor wrapped in red vinyl; the place’s co-owners, Gary Fishkop and Paul Cacici, had instead installed banquettes covered with custom-made buttery-soft spearmint green leather. Farther east in Brooklyn, at Marie’s in Bushwick, the James Beard-nominated chef Miguel Trinidad serves chopped cheese ravioli the size of drink coasters and lamb patty white ragù.

The federal court that granted his release did so on certain conditions. In 2022, not long after his mother died, the last of those restrictions were lifted. Hinckley had by then opened a Twitter account and amassed thousands of followers. !” His following grew, and he quickly began to use his platform to release music and promote upcoming gigs. But every single one of them was canceled before he could play, as a result of backlash, including anonymous threatening emails, received by the venues.

At the time, my husband, our 2-year-old, and two dogs were already living in a cramped one-bedroom apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Here are the things that surprised me from moving from New York City, to Portland, Maine. Everyone is so friendlyMainers have a reputation for being friendly, but I was still surprised by how friendly people were when we first moved here. We have friends with kids the same age as ours but also intergenerational friendships with older people in the community. Living in Maine has left me wanting more cultural events to attend.

After a fruitless call with the pharmacy, Mr. Goldstein, a comedian and writer who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., went for a walk to clear his head and had to sit down. “I went into a complete panic state,” Mr. Goldstein, 32, said. He had become used to wrangling with health care companies over billing mistakes and coverage ever since he was diagnosed with the condition as a teenager. Mr. Goldstein only managed to resolve the matter with CVS after months of calling the pharmacy three times a week. This year, after he hit his insurance deductible, he decided to celebrate by throwing a party.

Just 20 feet away, a man wearing a mask brandished a gun in the crowded dining room and with a henchman grabbed two phones and a watch from three men at a table near the front door. Diners dashed into the kitchen. Chairs toppled. The perpetrators quick-walked out and fled on a moped, leaving behind a half-empty dining room where a handful of unfired bullets had fallen to the floor. The stickup took less than 40 seconds.

We Counted 22,252 Cars to See How Much Congestion Pricing Might Have Made This MorningToday would have been the first Monday of New York City’s congestion pricing plan. We sent 27 people to count vehicles manually at four bridges, four tunnels and nine streets where cars entered the business district. In total, we counted 22,252 cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Monday. But it does give you a rough sense of scale: It’s a lot of cars, and a lot of money. had planned to use the congestion pricing revenue estimates to secure $15 billion in financing for subway upgrades.

New York City delivery workers who don't use cars have one of the deadliest jobs in the city. There are now more than 65,000 app-based restaurant delivery workers in the city, and about 80% of them use e-bikes and motorbikes. The city report found that 28.7% of e-bike or moped delivery workers experienced injuries that forced them to miss work, lose consciousness, or seek medical care. They're asking for wider protected bike lanes, or even separate lanes for e-bikes and mopeds, and charging facilities for e-bikes. Indeed, "New Yorkers are dependent on app delivery workers to keep them safe and fed during times of crisis," she added.

Neighborhood names are also shorthand for your rent or mortgage payments. In 2017, real-estate brokers in the historically Black New York neighborhood of Harlem sparked backlash when they tried to rebrand its south end as SoHa. At their best, new neighborhood names bring people together over a shared sense of pride in their little corner of the world. Along the way, these neighborhood names have veered into parody territory. I'm not saying that neighborhood names should be set in stone — in fact, I think it's natural for them to evolve alongside their populations.

In a new book, photographer Joshua Charow documents the rich history of New York City's artist lofts. Protected by the Loft Law, a generation of artists were able to preserve their live-work spaces. NEW LOOK Sign up to get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in markets, tech, and business — delivered daily. One factory in Brooklyn's South Williamsburg held his fascination as he discovered the raw, eclectic live-work spaces of artist's lofts. She had never purchased a home, and as a lawyer, I just assumed I knew how the system worked: The buyer has an agent, but the seller pays a commission (typically 6% of the sale price) that's split between their agent and the buyer's agent. So my agent wasn't going to find me my dream house, and the work of hunting was basically on me. But the real-estate industry has made it hard for many buyers to understand just how little having an agent can help. The class-action settlement with the NAR is going to make it a lot harder for sellers to be forced to pay for buyers' agents. Going forward, for people like me without an agent, a savvy seller may pay just 3% of the sales price to their own agent instead of 6% to be split with a buyer's agent.

On TikTok you'll find millions of users diagnosing themselves using the term "high-functioning" — high-functioning anxiety, high-functioning depression, high-functioning autism. The term "high-functioning" isn't actually clinical, but, generally, it refers to those who perform well in work and in school. So if someone has high-functioning depression, it means they are excelling at their job, despite being in poor mental health. "After Covid, the focus on mental health has been much more significant," she says. And experts believe it might signal a shift in how we believe mental health presents.

"High-functioning" isn't clinically defined, says John T. Maier, a psychotherapist in Cambridge Massachusetts, but generally it refers to those who perform well in work or in school. So if someone has high-functioning anxiety, it means they are excelling at their job, despite being in poor mental health. "When people say 'high-functioning,' they aren't saying, 'I'm doing a great job at raising my family' or 'I'm doing a great job at going to church,'" he says. "It means 'I'm doing a great job at work.'" Here are three signs you might have high-functioning anxiety.
