CNN —After a successful launch that was a decade in the making, Boeing’s Starliner mission is navigating new issues en route to the International Space Station, according to NASA. The space agency said late Wednesday in a post on X that two additional helium leaks had been detected on the vehicle. “Teams have identified three helium leaks on the spacecraft. “Looks like we picked up a couple more helium leaks,” mission control told the astronauts, as heard on the broadcast. It is still unclear what the impact of the leaks will be, but all indications are that the plan is still for Starliner to dock at the International Space Station on Thursday.

Rob Burrow, a rugby standout who overcame his diminutive stature with fleetness and ferocity to become an eight-time champion of Britain’s Super League and who was later hailed for raising awareness of motor neuron disease after being diagnosed with it in 2019, died on Sunday. His death — from M.N.D., a group of neurological disorders that includes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or A.L.S., also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease — was announced by the Leeds Rhinos, the British club with which he spent his entire 17-year professional career. It did not say where he died. Doubted at every turn for his small stature — he was about 5-foot-5 and 150 pounds — Burrow nevertheless became a star, earning nicknames like Mighty Atom and Pocket Rocket in the British tabloids. He was sapped of his physical gifts, however, when he was diagnosed with his neurological disorder at 37, just two years after his retirement in 2017.

Margot Benacerraf, a critically acclaimed Venezuelan documentary filmmaker whose hypnotic “Araya,” a visual tone poem chronicling the daily lives of salt workers on an austere peninsula on her country’s coast, shared the critics’ prize at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, died on Wednesday in Caracas. Her death was announced by the country’s culture minister. Hailed as a major figure of Latin American cinema, Ms. Benacerraf founded Venezuela’s national cinematheque and in 2018 was given the Order of Francisco de Miranda, honoring outstanding merit in the sciences and humanities, by the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro. But although Ms. Benacerraf was celebrated, she was not prolific. She made only two films in her career: “Reverón” (1952), a 23-minute documentary short about the reclusive later years of the Venezuelan artist Armando Reverón, and “Araya,” her sole feature-length work.

When your kid comes out as trans, here’s what to do
  + stars: | 2024-06-02 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
CNN spoke with a doctor, gender rights activists and parents of trans children about what to say when a child comes out as transgender, how to address certain challenges and what receiving gender-affirming care is like. Some parents want to support their child but worry if their gender identity is the result of a phase, or if they’ll change their mind later. It would be their decision resulting from the exploration of their gender identity, rather than someone trying to control it for them. Rhyland’s son later realized he is trans masculine nonbinary and uses he/him pronouns, and he’s OK with Rhyland calling him her son. (Trans masculine nonbinary means someone’s gender identity is nonbinary, yet they present in a typically masculine fashion with their name, style and more.)

There is a reason the value meals are only returning on a limited basis, says Shubhranshu Singh, associate professor of marketing at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, who has studied the economics of fast-food value meals. "They want customers to get the value meal and then buy more, the idea isn't that the consumer will buy a value meal and walk away," Singh said. "If consumers do that, selling that value meal will be such a bad idea." "How can they serve $5 value meals with that minimum wage and still make a profit? Why we need to know what time it is on the moon

CNN —It’s easy to take the moon for granted as a silvery orb in the night sky, providing a soft light on most evenings. The new system of measurement that NASA and its international partners need to agree on will have to account for the fact that seconds tick by faster on the moon. But it will be crucial for astronauts living in lunar habitats and scooting around in moon buggies who need to know exactly what time it is. Doug Ingle, the Voice of Iron Butterfly, Is Dead at 78

Doug Ingle, the lead singer and organist of Iron Butterfly, the band that turned a purportedly misheard lyric into “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” the 17-minute magnum opus that propelled acid rock into the outer reaches of excess in the late 1960s, died on May 24. His death was confirmed in a social media post by his son Doug Ingle Jr The post did not say where he died or specify a cause. Mr. Ingle was the last surviving member of the classic lineup of Iron Butterfly, the pioneering hard rock act he helped found in 1966. The band released its first three albums within a year, starting with “Heavy” in early 1968, and, after a lineup shuffle, cemented its place in rock lore with its second album, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” released that July. A radio version of the title song, whittled to under three minutes, made it to No.

Dollar steadies before inflation test; yen brushes off Tokyo CPI
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The dollar was licking wounds against peer currencies on Friday after a downward revision to U.S. GDP for the first quarter suggested room for rate cuts this year, while investors braced for inflation data. The dollar index , which measures the currency against six major peers, consolidated around 104.82 after dipping as low as 104.63 overnight. Softer U.S. consumer price inflation data earlier in May rekindled rate cut expectations for this year, weakening the dollar across the board and setting it on track to post its first monthly losses in 2024. "All told, the Tokyo CPI leaves us confident that nationwide underlying inflation will fall below 2% as soon as July." Price data for the euro zone is due on Friday, following a stronger-than-expected April inflation reading for Germany on Wednesday.
