A Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian missile facility early Wednesday threw up towering fireballs visible from space and thundering detonations that triggered earthquake monitors. Officials on both sides said it was the result of a large Ukrainian drone attack on Toropets, a town in the Tver region around 230 miles from the Russian capital. Russian state media has previously reported that the military was building an arsenal for storing missiles and other explosives there. Russia’s air defense systems destroyed some 54 drones launched overnight against five western Russian regions, Russian state news agencies said, citing a report from Moscow’s defense ministry. Kyiv has increasingly been hitting back with drone attacks on what it says are military targets on Russian soil.

The US started sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine in fall 2023, and altogether it has sent 31 of them. But without top armor, Ukraine needs to come up with its own solutions, he said. The unprecedented assault began on Tuesday, when up to 1,000 troops entered the Kursk region, according to Russian reports. In Ukraine, the country continues to battle Russia on domestic fronts, including a deadly air attack early Sunday on Kyiv. Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia, has also sent more troops to its border with Ukraine and said Saturday that Ukrainian drones had violated its airspace. Top Russian general Valery Gerasimov boasted last week that Ukrainian troops had been stopped, but Russia is yet to report pushing Kyiv’s forces back across the border. APBut advances into Russia come at a time when Ukrainian forces continue to struggle on several longstanding conflict zones inside its own borders.

Zelensky’s surprise attendance at the gathering is a stark illustration of Kyiv’s determination to keep the international community engaged in Ukraine’s defense – and its vision for peace – more than two years into Russia’s devastating invasion. A CNN team at the summit witnessed Zelensky and his delegation arriving. His attendance at the Shangri-la Dialogue in Singapore provides a rare opportunity for Zelensky to potentially meet with defense chiefs from across the Asia-Pacific, including China which has deepened its relations with Moscow since the war. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and defense heads from US allies Australia, Japan, and South Korea, as well as China’s Defense Minster Dong Jun are expected to be in attendance for the three-day gathering. Announcing his arrival at the summit, Zelensky said in a statement on X that he would hold “a number of meetings,” in particular with Austin, Singapore’s president and prime minister, Timor-Leste’s president and Singaporean investors.

Russia said it needs to learn more about the talks set to happen in Saudi Arabia, which were first reported by the Wall Street Journal and not scheduled to include a Kremlin delegation. The discussions are designed to lead to international backing of a peace agreement, favoring Ukraine's position, the WSJ reported. When asked about the talks, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov allegedly told reporters that Russia would follow the meeting, as the country needs to understand what goals are set and what will be discussed. "Any attempt to promote a peaceful settlement deserves a positive evaluation," Peskov said, according to a Reuters report. Peskov did, however, highlight that the Kremlin currently sees no grounds for peace negotiations with Ukraine.

Until recently most analysts and even US defense officials simply doubted Ukraine’s air defenses would be up to the job of repelling a sustained Russian assault. The obvious answer, in the Kyiv region at least, is the deployment of the US-made Patriot air defense systems, which arrived in Ukraine last month. Reinforcements on the wayOn May 9, the US Defense Department announced a $1.2 billion package to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses and artillery stockpiles. Meanwhile, on Monday the United Kingdom confirmed it would send hundreds of air defense missiles to Ukraine. “Should Russia manage to wear down Ukraine’s air defenses through attrition and gain air superiority, the war becomes significantly more challenging for Ukraine,” Williams wrote.
A Ukraine intelligence unit has appealed for funds to buy up to 1,000 kamikaze drones. Both Ukrainian and Russian forces have made extensive use of suicide drones in the conflict. The "Kryla," part of Ukraine's military intelligence service, wants a fleet of 1,000 so-called first-person-view drones to help defend its front line against Russian forces. Funds are being raised through the "Starlife-Charity" foundation, which has helped Ukrainian forces since Russia invaded last February. The defense ministry didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
Ukraine's vice prime minister confirmed that Kyiv, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia were struck. The attacks came after a blast crippled a bridge in Crimea that serves as a Russian supply line. This fresh volley of attacks from Russia comes after the Kerch Strait Bridge, a key supply route connecting Russia and Crimea, was damaged in a blast on Saturday. For his part, Putin on Sunday labeled the bridge blast a "terrorist act" carried out by the "special services of Ukraine." Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for the Kerch Strait Bridge blast but has hinted at its involvement in the incident.
