CNN —Czech Republic denied Georgia its first ever victory at a major international tournament, as the two teams drew 1-1 in its Group F encounter on Saturday. Georges Mikautadze scored the opening goal of the game at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, slotting home a penalty on the stroke of half time. The spot kick was awarded for a handball on Czech Republic’s Robin Hranáč, after the video assistant referee (VAR) recommended on-field referee Daniel Siebert consult the pitch-side screen. Czech Republic equalized on the hour mark, though, after Patrik Schick prodded home at the back post to level the scores. This is a developing story and will be updated.

CNN —Wout Weghorst scored less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute to earn the Netherlands an important 2-1 win in the opening game of Group D at Euro 2024. It was a closer game than perhaps many would have expected and Poland caused the Oranje problems throughout, in particular in the second half. It was another huge international goal for Weghorst, who stunned Argentina at the World Cup in 2022 with a late equalizer in the quarterfinals, as the Netherlands next face the tough test of France. After a dominant start from the Netherlands, Poland snatched the lead against the run of play through Buksa’s brilliant near-post header from Piotr Zielinski’s whipped corner. However, the Netherlands soon got the goal its early dominance deserved as Gakpo’s effort from outside the area took a fortuitous deflection and wrong-footed Szczęsny in the Poland goal.

The Netherlands overcame Poland with a 2-1 win, Denmark were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia, while England beat Serbia 1-0. But the goals, a lack of shots in one game and the results don’t tell the whole story of the day. The feel-good moment of the daySunday marked 1,100 days since Christian Eriksen collapsed at Copenhagen’s Parken stadium during a Euro 2020 game against Finland after suffering a cardiac arrest. He’s not fazed by anything, but will be key to England if they want to have a chance of winning Euro 2024.
