Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio.

"One of our favorite dividend strategies is to buy companies with a virtuous combination of (1) high dividend growth, and (2) a high free cash flow yield," Wolfe Research's Chris Senyek wrote. Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

☆ Stanley Druckenmiller trims his winning Nvidia bet, adds new Alphabet stake

Stanley Druckenmiller 's Duquesne Family Office added a new bet on Alphabet last quarter, while trimming his favorite artificial intelligence play — Nvidia , according to its latest filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The family office built a $110 million stake in Alphabet, making it Druckenmiller's seventh biggest holding at the end of the third quarter. The bet could complement his other big AI bets as Druckenmiller emerged as a bull on AI. Druckenmiller once managed George Soros' Quantum Fund and shot to fame after helping make a $10 billion bet against the British pound in 1992. Druckenmiller believes the market will be "very challenged" in the current environment, and only disciplined stock pickers will be rewarded.

☆ As earnings season winds down, investors turn to Tuesday's debt ceiling meeting

With only a small fraction of the S & P 500 left to report quarterly earnings, investors are now turning their focus to another major hurdle for the markets and economy: the debt ceiling crisis. Earlier this week, we looked back to debt limit crisis of 2011 for potential lessons. The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. Within the portfolio, Wynn Resorts will report Tuesday, after the closing bell, and Disney will report on Wednesday, after the closing bell. Estee Lauder (EL) and Emerson Electric (EMR) reported earnings before the opening bell.
