In some cities, children look forward to snow days. In New Delhi, as temperatures cool around November trapping filthy air over the Indian capital, parents say their children eagerly await ‘pollution holidays.’The city’s residents are used to a blanket of smog that blots out the sky and heralds the arrival of the Hindu festival of Diwali. Delhi recorded worse average air-quality readings in November 2019 than it has seen this month. But residents and visitors to the city are reeling more than usual this year after experiencing less intense air pollution during the pandemic era.

Some restaurant owners in India say fewer diners are coming through their doors after an initial bump last year. NEW DELHI—India’s economy grew 4.4% in the October-to-December quarter from a year earlier, weighed down by sluggish consumer demand and high inflation. The gross domestic product figure released Tuesday for the fiscal third quarter shows a slowing of growth compared with the preceding two quarters. The economy climbed 6.3% in the period from July to September and 13.2% in the April-to-June quarter.
NEW DELHI—Indian income-tax officials on Tuesday searched offices of the BBC weeks after the British broadcaster aired a documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that New Delhi described as propaganda. The British Broadcasting Corp. said on its official Twitter account that it was fully cooperating with the authorities at its offices in New Delhi and Mumbai. “We hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible,” it said.
KANPUR, India—Since losing his wife during a wave of the coronavirus last year, Ram Bilas Kovind said, he has been turned away repeatedly by authorities in the northern Indian city of Kanpur as he has unsuccessfully sought compensation available to India’s Covid-19 victims. “They ask us for proof. How can we prove when she wasn’t tested, when she wasn’t hospitalized? Almost everyone in the area was sick at the same time,” said the 69-year-old. “We have nothing.”
India’s gross domestic product grew 6.3% from July to September as global pressures on prices and supply chains, along with economic downturns in the U.S. and European Union, slowed its economic recovery. In April to June, the economy grew 13.5% from a year earlier, benefiting from the easing of covid restrictions, and from a comparison to a quarter in which India’s economy was hit hard by a fierce wave of the illness.
The Vikram-S rocket blasted off at around 11:30 a.m. local time from the Sriharikota spaceport, reaching an altitude of 55.6 miles. India tested its first privately developed rocket on Friday with a successful suborbital launch that marks a step forward in the country’s push to develop a commercial space industry. The Vikram-S rocket, which was developed by the startup Skyroot Aerospace, blasted off at around 11:30 a.m. local time from the Sriharikota spaceport off the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It reached an altitude of 89.5 kilometers (55.6 miles), with all of the rocket’s systems working as planned, the company said.
