CNN —Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable season took another extraordinary turn on Thursday as a late 2-2 draw against AS Roma stretched the club’s unbeaten run to 49 games. The 4-2 aggregate victory saw Leverkusen reach a first European final in 22 years, while Josip Stanišić’s 97th-minute strike ensured that the recently-crowned German champion remains undefeated this season. It means that Leverkusen has now surpassed Portuguese team Benfica’s record from 1963-65 for the longest unbeaten run across all top-level matches since the introduction of European competitions, according to UEFA. “It says a lot about the team, the conviction that we have and it’s great to finally reach the final. According to UEFA, Scottish side Celtic’s unbeaten run of 62 games between 1915 and 1917 is the outright record for a European club, although that only included domestic league matches.

MUENSTER, Germany, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich cruised past third-tier club Preussen Muenster 4-0 despite having several players missing, including striker Harry Kane, in their delayed German Cup first round match on Tuesday. Kane had scored a hat-trick in their 7-0 demolition of VfL Bochum on Saturday but was rested and left on the bench. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, who was also missing three of his central defenders through injury, opted for 18-year-old Mathys Tel and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting up front. Bayern fans threw hundreds of tennis balls onto the pitch, in protest against the decision to hold the German Super Cup last month on the day of the Cup first round, forcing Bayern to delay their first-round match. France youth international Tel added a fourth from a tight angle in the 85th to continue his good form, having also scored three goals in the league so far this season.

Kane's three goals put him above club great Gerd Mueller, Miroslav Klose and Mario Mandzukic who all scored five times in their first five games. The Bavarians, who beat Manchester United 4-3 in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, move up to 13 points in top spot from five Bundesliga games. Earlier, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had tapped in for a fourth-minute lead from a perfectly-timed Kingsley Coman assist. Kane made sure of a club record when he scored with a 54th-minute penalty before Coman hit the woodwork on the hour. CNN —Bayern Munich defeated Manchester United 4-3 in a chaotic Champions League game at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, after which Untied goalkeeper André Onana said that he was to blame for the loss. “It’s a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down … We just have to move on,” Onana said on TNT Sports. “This is the life of a goalkeeper and, if we didn’t win today, it’s because of me.”He added: “The team went down because of that mistake. Thomas Müller hit the post with Bayern looking to increase its lead, before 18-year-old forward Mathys Tel scored his first Champions League goal moments later to make it 4-2. “It was a crazy finish,” Kane, who has now scored five goals from his first six appearances in Germany, told TNT Sports.

Dortmund, who missed out on the Bundesliga title last season after dramatically slipping up on the final matchday, needed an 88th minute goal by Donyell Malen to beat Cologne 1-0 in their opener. Last week they managed only a 1-1 draw at VfL Bochum with their attack looking toothless for much of the game. Fuellkrug, who passed a medical late on Thursday, topped the scorer list last season with 16 goals, the same number as Christopher Nkunku. "Thanks to strong performances he has become a pillar in attack for the national team," said Dortmund sports director Sebastian Kehl. "I was extremely happy when the offer came because the step to this club was what I was wishing for," Fuellkrug said.

MUNICH, Germany, May 5 (Reuters) - Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich will be without injured striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and defender Josip Stanisic when they travel with a "decimated squad" to Werder Bremen on Saturday, coach Thomas Tuchel said on the eve of the match. "He is feeling the knee and it causes discomfort," Tuchel said of Choupo-Moting's nagging injury. "He will out for about two weeks but two weeks at this stage are a lot and the number of matches is not increasing. Bayern reclaimed the lead last week with a win over Hertha Berlin as Dortmund slipped up against VfL Bochum with a draw. We have the chance to up the ante now but we cannot allow ourselves any more ups and downs," Tuchel said.

MUNICH, Germany, May 4 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich want as few distractions as possible as they look to salvage a disappointing season by at least retaining their Bundesliga title, delaying a much-anticipated board meeting until after the end of the season. After a shock German Cup exit with a home loss to Freiburg, Bayern were also eliminated in the Champions League last eight by Manchester City. With four games left and Bayern travelling to 12th placed Werder Bremen on Saturday, the club announced this week it would delay a May 22 board meeting until after the end of the season. "The Bayern Munich board has set a new date of May 30 for its scheduled second quarter board meeting," it said in a statement. Freiburg, in fourth on 56 points, host fifth-placed Leipzig, who have 54, in the battle for Champions League places.

BERLIN, April 28 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich are playing catch-up to leaders Borussia Dortmund for the league title with five games remaining but coach Thomas Tuchel said the situation was not yet hopeless for his team and their shot at an 11th straight league crown. The Bavarians dropped to second place on 59, a point behind Dortmund, after last week's 3-1 loss to Mainz 05. "The situation has become more difficult for us now but it is not hopeless," Tuchel told a news conference. Hertha are in last place but have brought back former coach Pal Dardai in a last-ditch effort to avoid relegation. "I don't know if I will watch it," Tuchel said of the Dortmund game.

The 33-year-old, a Dortmund youth player who joined the senior team in 2012 from Borussia Moenchengladbach, has become their talismanic leader despite an injury-plagued career. With 161 goals in all competitions in his Dortmund career he is just 16 shy of the club's record. "But beyond that, I still really want to do my best for the club I've spent over half my life with. Leaders Dortmund ready to open up gap with win over Bochum
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
With second-placed Bayern Munich, a point behind on 59, in action at home to Hertha Berlin on Sunday, victory over Bochum would pile more pressure on Dortmund's embattled title rivals. Their last league title dates back to 2012. Dortmund coach Edin Terzic could be without defender Nico Schlotterbeck against Bochum while Raphael Guerreiro trained alone earlier this week. They are in 15th place on 27 points, just two points above the relegation playoff spot. Hertha are without a win in their last seven games and are anchored in last place on 22 points points.
BERLIN, April 27 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund have five more steps to take to lift their first Bundesliga title in 11 years, coach Edin Terzic said on Thursday, with his team ready for the season's crunch period. They visit VfL Bochum in the mini Ruhr derby on Friday while Bayern are in action at home to Hertha Berlin on Sunday. We have to take five more steps and the next one is tomorrow," Terzic told a news conference. We play tomorrow against Bochum and we can improve our situation tomorrow only if we bag the three points," he added. They also have to play VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Augsburg and Mainz 05.

BOCHUM, Germany Oct 23 (Reuters) - Relegation-threatened VfL Bochum scored once in either half to stun Union Berlin 2-1 on Sunday, leaving the Bundesliga leaders with only a slim gap at the top and bagging a second win of the season to move off the bottom of the table. Pantovic had another chance to put Union back in the game but the former Bochum player's 78th-minute penalty was parried by keeper Manuel Riemann. Bochum's second win of the season lifted them off last place and into 17th on seven points. Schalke 04, who sacked coach Frank Kramer on Wednesday, dropped to bottom place following their 2-1 defeat at Hertha Berlin courtesy of Wilfried Kanga's 88th-minute winner.
