NEW YORK (AP) — Franz Welser-Möst is back on the Cleveland Orchestra's podium, concentrating again on music instead of his health. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesWelser-Möst had surgery Sept. 1 to remove a cancerous tumor from his bladder and came back to Cleveland to conduct the orchestra's season opener on Sept. 28. Both are very well now, so there’s every reason to be optimistic.”Welser-Möst has been Cleveland's music director since 2002-03 and has appointed 69 musicians, including 52 of the current 105 members. And in those days, of course, I was like: How on earth is he doing that?”Welser-Möst first conducted the Cleveland Orchestra in 1993 and became music director for the 2002-03 season. On the afternoon of his return concert on Jan. 11, he announced he will retire as music director at the end of 2026-27, his 25th season.

REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 23 (Reuters) - German trade union Verdi has called on members to go on strike at five Amazon (AMZN.O) distribution centres across Germany on Black Friday, it said in a statement on Thursday. Strong demand thanks to bargains on Black Friday mean the day is usually one of the most profitable for online retailers like Amazon. "Amazon employees have decided to rename Black Friday 'Make Amazon Pay Day'", said Silke Zimmer, the member for retail on Verdi's governing board. "It's not for nothing that half of our colleagues have been with us for over five years," the Amazon spokesperson said.

Companies Deutsche Bank AG FollowBERLIN, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Germany's Verdi union has called on workers at Deutsche Bank's DB Direkt GmbH subsidiary to go on a one day strike on Wednesday, it said, raising pressure in wage talks. "Employers left the first round of negotiations without an offer. This is an affront to the workers, who are suffering from persistent high prices in light of low wages," said Jan Duscheck, head of Verdi's banking group said in a statement. LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - A new film "Callas - Paris, 1958" is about to transport audiences back to the night 65 years ago when opera legend Maria Callas for the first time dazzled a Paris audience. Celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, as well as then French president René Coty attended the three-hour performance at the Paris Opera. It was also broadcast live on television to more than 30 million people, but until film-maker Tom Volf and his team meticulously restored film reels that had lain forgotten, it had only been seen in black and white. He said the work of his team made the film "as vivid as if it was shot last month". It will be released in cinemas in some 40 countries between November and December in celebration of the centenary of Callas' birth.

"Each item contributes in creating a comprehensive image of this astonishing woman," Kostis Bitzanis, the museum's project director told Reuters. "Maria Callas is one of the biggest brand names world-wide, she is a woman who became a legend," he said. Born Maria Anna Sophie Cecilia Kalogeropoulos in New York in December 1923 to Greek parents, Callas was credited with the almost single-handed revival of the Italian bel canto vocal technique. On the second floor of the museum, visitors can listen to parts of Callas' signature performances, including the aria "Casta Diva" from Bellini's opera "Norma”, and hear her teaching at the Julliard School in New York in 1971-1972.

Italy's La Scala to open new season with Verdi classic

[1/2] People watch a live broadcast of Modest Musorgskij's opera "Boris Godunov" on a giant screen at the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery during La Scala Opera House's gala season opener in Milan, Italy, December 7, 2022. The opening night of the La Scala season has become a highlight of the calendar for the country's business and political elite, coinciding with the city's Feast of St. Ambrose holiday. Verdi's works have been performed at La Scala since 1839 and the choice of a historical work by a local favourite is likely to prove less contentious on Dec. 7. La Scala last year mitigated the impact by cutting consumption of gas and electricity by 22% and around 15% respectively, its artistic director Dominque Meyer said on Monday. In its new season, La Scala will host 14 operas, seven ballets, as well as concerts featuring Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, Briton Daniel Harding and Russian-born Kirill Petrenko.
Amazon workers called to strike across globe on Black Friday

BERLIN, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Workers at Amazon (AMZN.O) sites across the globe, including in the United States, Germany and France, were expected to go on strike on Black Friday, targeting the online retailer on one of the busiest shopping days of the year with calls for better pay. A global call for strike action came from the Make Amazon Pay initiative, which listed industrial action planned in over 30 countries across the globe. A spokesperson for Amazon in Germany would not immediately comment on the demands when contacted by Reuters. "This is the first time that Amazon has had an international strike day," said Monika Di Silvestre, Verdi's representative for Amazon workers. "This is very important, because a major global corporation like Amazon cannot be confronted locally, regionally or nationally alone," she added.
The walkout by security staff has resulted in a high three-digit number of flight cancellations, German airports association ADV said. Some 160 of them were at Duesseldorf airport, accounting for more than half of the planned 290 departures and arrivals, the airport said. At Cologne/Bonn, 94 out of 136 flights were called off, and Berlin airport's website also showed many cancelled flights. Tuesday's walkout will hit Germany's busiest airport, Frankfurt, which handled around 2.1 million passengers last month. Labour union Verdi is demanding that employers raise the wages of airport security staff by at least 1 euro an hour for the next 12 months and that staff in different parts of Germany earn the same.
