☆ NASA Picks 3 Companies to Help Astronauts Drive Around the Moon

NASA will be renting some cool wheels to drive around the moon. Space agency officials announced on Wednesday that they have hired three companies to come up with preliminary designs for vehicles to take NASA astronauts around the lunar south polar region in the coming years. After the astronauts return to Earth, these vehicles would be able to self-drive around as robotic explorers, similar to NASA’s rovers on Mars. The self-driving capability would also allow the vehicle to meet the next astronaut mission at a different location. “Where it will go, there are no roads,” Jacob Bleacher, the chief exploration scientist at NASA, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Jack Burke Jr., who was the oldest living Masters champion and staged the greatest comeback ever at Augusta National for one of his two majors, died Friday in Houston. Burke, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, also won the PGA Championship and was equally skilled as a teacher. He built the fabled Champions Golf Club in Houston and delivered lessons along with a dose of homespun wisdom. His passing was confirmed by Steve Timms, the CEO and president of the Houston Golf Association who spoke with Burke's wife, Robin. Burke was part of the original PGA Hall of Fame in Pinehurst and was among PGA champions not ushered into the new World Golf Hall of Fame when it opened in 1998 in Florida.

Jack Burke Jr., a top player on the P.G.A. tour in the postwar years who won two major golf championships in one season, then became a sought-after instructor to some of the game’s greatest stars, has died at 100. He was the oldest living winner of the Masters and P.G.A. Burke’s banner year was 1956, when he won both the Masters and P.G.A. Only weeks earlier, having gone winless since the Inverness open in Ohio in 1953, Burke, who was 33, had announced that he was considering retiring.

Though they don’t require watering, greens sculpted in areas susceptible to heavy rain — such as Florida or Georgia — invite the threat of standing water, which can lead to mold and ruin the playing experience. “You can make it look pretty and beautiful and they love it, but it better play right,” Nappi said.

A company called ClearingBid this week is set to unveil a new online portal that it says will change the way companies go public and make initial public offerings more transparent and accessible. The company says it will use what's known as an electronic order book to set IPO prices, similar to the way prices are set on a stock exchange. On the first day of trading, the stock shot up to $70 a share, a 63% increase from the IPO price. "If Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs aren't participating," he said, "those accounts can walk across the street to Schwab, and what's going to happen is that they're going to lose assets under management, they're going to lose commissions, they're going to lose client retention, and they're going to come our way."
