CNN —Bugatti has unveiled its new model, the Bugatti Tourbillon, a massively powerful hybrid with an equally impressive pricetag. But Mate Rimac, the chief executive of the new company, now called Bugatti Rimac, said he never had any intention of making an all-electric Bugatti. Like the Bugatti Chiron and Veyron models before it, the new Bugatti Tourbillon will have a huge 16-cylinder gas engine. In total, the Bugatti Tourbillon will be able to put out at least 1,800 horsepower, according to Bugatti Rimac. The Chiron’s gas engine had four turbochargers that pushed air into the engine to help it produce more power.

CNN —Toyota is recalling 145,000 Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander SUVs because of an issue that could cause one of the side curtain airbags to fail to deploy in some situations. The curtain airbag on the driver’s side may not deploy properly “during certain crashes” if the driver’s side window is rolled down, according to a statement shared by Toyota Thursday. Toyota did not provide details on the type of situation in which the problem might occur. Both the Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander are new models that went on sale last year. Southern California boasts the highest concentration of chrome plating shops in America and regulators in that state have been requiring those methods for years. But California is now moving toward an outright ban on chrome plating using hexavalent chromium while offering funding for chrome platers to transition to other methods. In 2019, green slime oozing out onto a highway near Detroit was found to be hexavalent chromium leaking from a nearby business. “We are also using light as the new chrome,” VW said in a statement shared with CNN. “Chrome peaked in the ’50s with the big American land yachts and stuff with giant chrome bumpers and giant chrome grills.

CNN —Waymo issued a recall for its 672 driverless cars to make them less likely to drive into telephone poles. The recall follows a May 21 accident in Phoenix, Arizona, in which a Waymo driverless car hit a telephone pole that was installed in the roadway in an alley. The vehicle was pulling over to pick up a passenger when it struck the pole at low speed, according to Waymo. While the car was severely damaged, no one was hurt, according to documents Waymo filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall applies only to the fleet of modified Jaguar I-Pace SUVs Waymo owns and operates itself.

In my case, I’ve rented EVs from Turo, a peer-to-peer car rental platform that’s sort of like Airbnb but for cars. CNN —Kia is warning owners of almost 463,000 of its popular Telluride SUVs in the United States to keep them parked outside and away from buildings because the front seats could start burning. The recall involves 2020 through 2024 Kia Telluride models. In 2023, another customer complained of a smoke smell from the passenger-side power seat, which wasn’t working. In 2024, at least one Kia owner reported that the driver’s seat caught fire while they were driving. An investigation by Kia concluded that the problem was with the power seat switches that could be damaged in a way that causes its motor to overheat.

CNN —Sales of new electric vehicles have started to slow, but the opposite is happening with used EVs. The used car sales website Carvana saw its used EV sales more than double since last year. While increases in used EV sales are huge, they still make up a small portion of overall used vehicle sales. Used EVs still cost more, on average, than used gas-powered vehicles, but they cost a lot less than new EVs. While prices for new EVs average around $63,000, prices for used ones average around $36,000, according to Cars.com.

In a new complaint, the department alleges Best Practice, a staffing agency, sent the child to work at SMART Alabama, which provided car parts to Hyundai. The complaint alleges all three companies were responsible for employing the child. “We are reviewing the new lawsuit and intend to vigorously defend the company,” Hyundai said in a statement provided to CNN. The complaint, filed in an Alabama federal court, seeks an order requiring the companies to release any profits related to the use of child labor as well as an order to stop any future use of child labor. A catalytic converter cleans a car’s exhaust, making the air safer to breathe for all of us. On its website, the US Environmental Protection Agency has called the catalytic converter “one of the great environmental inventions of all time.” But it’s not what the catalytic converter does that attracts desperate criminals. For the most part, the catalytic converters end up getting sold to recycling companies that strip out the materials to make new catalytic converters.
