Battery maker Northvolt on Monday announced plans to cut a total of 1,600 jobs in Sweden as part of a major cost-cutting drive. The strategic action requires Northvolt to reduce its global workforce by around 20% and a 25% reduction in Sweden, the firm said. Northvolt, which currently delivers batteries from its first gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, said in March that it had over 6,000 employees. The announced measures come as part of a broader strategic review and in response to what Northvolt described as "a challenging macroeconomic climate." Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Northvolt is one of Europe's most valuable privately-held tech firms that builds lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle industry.

Patrick T. Fallon | AFP | Getty ImagesNew data shows a surge in trade between China and Mexico at a time of tough tariff talk during the presidential campaign. This nearshoring of manufacturing enables companies to change a product's origin of goods, also referred to as the "economic nationality" of a product. Data from freight analytics firm Xeneta shows China to Mexico container trade up by 26.2% from January to July 2024, after growing by 33% in 2023. Mexico is also a member of the Pacific Alliance, a trade bloc formed by Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. "Bilateral tariffs should be expected to lead to trade diversion, and that's exactly what happened in the aftermath of the trade war.

An employee does final inspections on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class at the Mercedes-Benz US International factory in Vance, Alabama. Mercedes shares fell more than 8% Friday after becoming the latest carmaker to cut its guidance this year as sluggish demand in China and trade disputes weigh on the sector. Shares pared losses slightly to trade 6.9% lower as of 9:40 a.m. London time. "This affected the overall sales volume in China including sales in the Top-End segment. Overall, the sales mix in the second half of 2024 is expected to remain unchanged versus the first half, and therefore weaker than originally expected," the company said.

The Swedish automaker said it now aims for between 90% and 100% of its car sales to be fully electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2030. "I think a lot of manufacturers are obviously going through this process [of delaying electrification targets] at the moment. The U.K., for instance, introduced a mandate that requires 22% of new car sales this year to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The mandate, which aims to reduce the number of polluting vehicles on the road, will rise annually until it reaches 100% of new car sales by 2035. Northvolt, a key battery producer for Europe's electric vehicle industry, announced Monday that it plans to cut jobs, shut down one of its sites, and enter into discussions with partners and investors to secure the future of a facility in Poland. Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Northvolt is one of Europe's most valuable privately-held tech firms that builds lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle industry. The battery maker cited a "challenging macroeconomic environment and our subsequent reassessment of Northvolt's near-term priorities" as the key reasons behind its decision to embark on the cost-cutting drive. Northvolt has faced a litany of pressures in recent months — not least the demand challenges facing the broader electric vehicle industry. BMW said at the time that the deal had been cancelled due to Northvolt being unable to deliver on time.

Volvo Cars, which is owned by China's Geely Holding, had been among the first legacy carmakers to promise a complete switch to EVs. The firm said its long-term aim remains to become a fully electric carmaker. The target replaces a 2021 pledge for Volvo Cars' lineup to be fully electric by the end of the decade. The move means Volvo Cars follows in the footsteps of other industry players in scaling back its EV ambitions. Shares of Volvo Cars traded more than 4% lower Wednesday.

Gigacasting is a form of die-casting — pouring materials like molten aluminum into large molds to form parts. For example, the front and rear portions of the early Model 3 chassis each contained more than 70 parts, according to Tesla. Reducing weight ultimately means more range for the customer, and substituting one large megacast for dozens of stamped parts reduces labor and boosts production, he said. Severinson views repair as a solvable challenge: "There is a solution to repairing also a casted rear floor," he said. Burns and Volk say that might be a sign that the company is hitting some technical limits.

One technique is called gigacasting or megacasting where high pressure molds are used to form molten aluminum into large parts. Electric car maker Tesla is credited with pioneering the method, and some rivals also are stepping up investments. CNN —The White House on Thursday said it would hand out $1.7 billion to help convert closed-down or at-risk auto manufacturing and assembly facilities to make electric and hybrid vehicles. The funding comes as growth in new electric vehicle sales has slowed, even as the Biden administration wants to keep US EV manufacturers competitive with a surging Chinese industry. “This announcement is a hallmark of the Biden administration’s industrial strategy, which is a strategy to bring manufacturing jobs back to America after years of offshoring,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm told reporters. The plants also include facilities from vehicle component manufacturing to full vehicle assembly, according to a senior administration official. The move comes as the growth rate of EV sales has slowed even as total EV sales have continued to rise.

Washington CNN —A vast swath of the US economy is showing signs of weakness as unemployment rises to its highest point in more than two years. “When you think of services, a lot of it is driven by the consumer, and consumers are key to where the US economy goes,” James Knightley, chief international economist at ING, told CNN. Consumer spending, which makes up about 70% of the US economy, has already moderated over the past few months, government statistics show, and retailers themselves have said they’ve noticed shoppers across the income spectrum change their purchasing behavior. The bottom 60% of households by income accounted for a larger proportion of spending on health care services. Why tariffs on Chinese EVs may not work
  + stars: | 2024-06-15 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The Chinese auto sector is increasingly making global automakers and politicians hot under the collar. In the early 1980s, the Chinese auto industry barely existed. President Joe Biden last month introduced stiff tariffs on Chinese EVs, effectively doubling the list price, which can otherwise be as cheap as $11,500. The administration says Chinese firms have benefited from unfair government support, and Chinese EV imports threaten the Biden administration's big investments in EVs. But a few auto industry insiders are skeptical that tariffs will be able to hold off Chinese imports for long.

Citi analysts said the EU's additional tariffs were "generally benign," while one analyst from Morningstar pointed out that the additional duties were "modest" in comparison to U.S. hikes on Chinese EVs last month. BYD will be subject to additional tariffs of 17.4%, Geely will get an extra 20% duty. Citi analystsThe EU said in a statement it has provisionally concluded that Chinese EV makers benefits from "unfair subsidization," which resulted in "threat of economic injury" to EU's EV industry. watch nowThe additional duties come after the EU launched a probe in October.

The impact on China’s EV makers will vary depending on the level of tariff and each company’s cost structure. “One critical issue for China is that the EU accounted for 38% of China’s EV exports in 2023,” Sebastian said. In February, nine government agencies, including the Commerce Ministry and the central bank, vowed to provide support to accelerate Chinese EV makers’ global push. Tesla prices to riseIn contrast to BYD, state-owned carmaker SAIC is in a “disastrous” situation facing 38.1% in additional tariffs, according to Sebastian. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, launched the probe in October to establish whether Chinese EV prices are artificially low because of subsidies and so hurt European carmakers. Europe is the main destination for Chinese EV exports. The new EV tariffs are likely to kick off intense negotiations between Beijing and Brussels aimed at averting a damaging trade war. Many of them manufacture cars in China and then sell them in Europe, a set-up that will be more costly as a result of the higher tariffs. Alternatively, Beijing could pledge investment into EU countries and promise better market access in China for EU firms, the Rhodium analysts wrote.
