Others, however, said they are still confident in flight safety, pointing out that commercial air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation. Cara and Erin Ashcraft survived the crash of American Airlines Flight 1420, operated on a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, during a landing at Little Rock National Airport on June 1, 1999. “I’ve never had concerns (about air travel safety) before. This is the hole left behind when the plug door of an Alaska Airlines flight blew off midflight on January 5, 2024. Pierson is wary of attitudes around the apparent safety of American air travel, he said.

The American plane maker has been under intense pressure since early January, when a panel blew off a brand-new Alaska Airlines 737 Max midflight. Photos You Should See View All 60 ImagesTHE CRASHESThe bulk of criticism and investigations swirling around Boeing today center on the company's Max jets. Boeing agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle a Justice Department investigation, admitting that employees misled regulators about the safety of the 737 Max. Last year, Boeing reported a problem with fittings on Max jets where the fuselage meets the vertical section of the tail. Also under investigation is what prompted the emergency landing in Wichita, Kansas, of a Denver-bound United Airlines flight in December.

CNN —A United Airlines Boeing 767 plane lost its emergency evacuation slide in mid-air Monday – and it ended up in the backyard of a home near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, officials and a witness said. Patrick Devitt lives in the neighborhood where the slide came down, several miles from the runways at O’Hare. When he got to the house, he dragged the slide from his backyard to the front of the home. It’s a very, very big piece of equipment that fell.”Maintenance workers at O’Hare discovered the plane was missing its slide after it landed, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. A House panel voted Wednesday to raise the mandatory retirement age for commercial airline pilots to 67 from 65 as the industry faces a persistent shortage of aviators. The last time Congress raised the pilot retirement age was in 2007 when it was raised from 60 to 65. The committee voted 63-0 on the proposed FAA reauthorization bill Wednesday, but it now faces a vote in the full House. It isn't clear whether the new retirement age provision would be in a final version of the bill or make it through a vote in either chamber. The Air Line Pilots Association, the country's biggest pilot labor union, which represents aviators at major carriers such as Delta and United , has opposed the measure.

REUTERS/Mike BlakeCHICAGO, April 4 (Reuters) - U.S. airlines relied on loyalty programs for revenue during the pandemic, and industry executives and experts said income from them should hold up if the economy slips into a recession. Non-flying activities now account for more than half of all miles earned in major loyalty programs, noted Evert de Boer, managing partner at consulting firm On Point Loyalty, making airlines more resilient to economic swings. People curtailed flying during the pandemic, but still spent on airline loyalty credit cards, said JetBlue (JBLU.O) vice president Chris Buckner. Airline loyalty programs are also highly profitable.

A United Airlines wing clipped the tail of another aircraft during pushback at Boston airport on Monday. No injuries were reported, but the Federal Aviation Administration told Insider it is investigating the event. In early February, two other United planes — a Boeing 787 and a Boeing 757 — collided at Newark, with the latter nearly losing its entire winglet. About a week later, an American Airlines aircraft crashed into a shuttle bus at Los Angeles International Airport, sending four to the hospital. Then, in February, a FedEx Boeing 767 cargo plane nearly landed on top of a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 passenger jet in Austin.
Billy Nolen, the Federal Aviation Administration's acting administrator, is creating a safety review committee. The group will assess recent incidents and determine if there are any emerging trends. "Recent events remind us that we must not become complacent. According to the FAA, the CAST has been a vital group in proactively identifying aviation safety risks and addressing them before an accident occurs. Three weeks later, a FedEx Boeing 767 nearly landed on top of a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 in Austin, Texas.
United Airlines Boeing wide body 777-200 aircraft as seen during take off and flying phase, passing in front of the air traffic control tower while the plane is departing from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport AMS towards Houston IAH in the United States of America as flight UA21. The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that it is proposing a more than $1.1 million penalty against United Airlines for allegedly failing to perform required fire-system safety checks on its Boeing 777s. United didn't immediately comment. Removal of the check resulted in United's failure to perform the required check and the operation of aircraft that did not meet airworthiness requirement," the FAA said in a statement. United had 96 Boeing 777s as of the end of 2021, making up about 11% of its total fleet, according to a securities filing.

The airline told Insider the passengers were given a hotel room, where they "were looked after around the clock by Lufthansa staff." However, NTV reported some passengers were offered flights for days or even weeks later, but Lufthansa told Insider that all passengers will have left by Monday — three days after the diversion to Luanda.
