ET Retail Sales Slump as Economic Recovery Shows Signs of Stalling: Live Updates RIGHT NOW Banks are starting to release their rainy-day reserves, giving their earnings a boost. JPMorgan Chase reported earnings of just over $12 billion, although the increase was attributed mostly to the newly freed funds. Still, the economic recovery that many thought would come once vaccinations began has been postponed, at least until the spring. Those gains have come even as fresh data shows the economic damage being done by the pandemic. On Friday, the Commerce Department said retail sales fell for a third-straight month in December, despite the holiday shopping season.

Democratic lawmakers are urging the Defense Department to "immediately" investigate extremist activity within the US military and implement a plan to prevent the ideology from further spreading within its ranks. "The issue of white supremacy and extremist ideology within the ranks of our military is not new, but the attack on the Capitol makes clear this alarming trend must be immediately addressed," the lawmakers continued. "We urge you to launch a comprehensive investigation into instances of white supremacist and violent fringe extremist activity within the military." Several people who participated in the looting and unlawful assembly inside the lawmakers' chambers have since been identified as military veterans, some of whom are former officers, as well as law enforcement officials. "Members of the Armed Forces are an extension of our communities and are not exempt from extremist influences on the rise within the civilian community," the lawmakers' letter continued.

The past week has called on corporate leaders across industries to take a stand against the insurgence at the US Capitol. In the coming year, consumers will be watching for how company leaders take a stand for the causes they believe in — and lukewarm messaging won't cut it anymore. After news of the attempted coup spread on Wednesday, business leaders across the board issued public statements. Going forward, stakeholders will keep their eyes trained on their company leaders, waiting to see which direction they'll steer their companies next. They'll be watching to see if their leaders have the courage to take a stand for the causes they claim to care about.

Since his resounding defeat in the presidential election in November, Donald Trump has done everything but concede to the democratic will of the American people. He unleashed an avalanche of lies and baseless claims of fraud — conspiracy theories that filled his supporters with a delusional belief that the election had been stolen from him. He attempted to cajole and intimidate officials at all levels of government into subverting the election and keeping him in office. And then, running out of recourse, legitimate and illegitimate, he incited an insurrection against the government and the Constitution that he swore to uphold. We should not allow him to menace the security of our country for a second longer.
