That's according to research out Tuesday from Mozilla and CheckFirst, which concludes that leading tech platforms are lagging in their ad transparency tools. None of the results were great, and some were "a major disappointment," according to the researchers. "This is now no longer something that's voluntary," Claire Pershan, EU advocacy lead at Mozilla, told CNBC. It's troubling news as the major platforms prepare for a huge year of elections that affect upward of 4 billion people in more than 40 countries. Lesplingart told CNBC that users had to know the advertiser name, targeted country and date of the advertisement in order to export to an ad file.

Jourova, the EU commissioner responsible for the digital economy, met TikTok Chief Executive Shou Chew and X's head of global affairs, Nick Pickles, as the European Union investigates Big Tech's efforts to remove harmful content. The EU is also looking to prevent disinformation influencing the EU parliament election in June 2024. Under the European Union's Digital Services Act, which entered into force a year ago, very large tech platforms and search engines must do more to tackle harmful and illegal content or risk fines. Jourova said on X and via her spokesperson that she was pleased by some improvements and urged TikTok to continue stepping up its work against illegal and harmful content and child abuse. For X, Jourova said it had insufficient staff speaking some EU languages to counter disinformation and expressed concern about reports of high numbers of violent and illegal content.

Meta is expanding its enforcement of its policies against violent posts and misinformation amid the Israel-Hamas war as charged images and posts balloon on social media. The DSA requires social media platforms to monitor and remove illegal content in Europe. Meta described the actions it has taken since the conflict began in a blog post published Friday. Hamas is designated under that policy and banned from Meta platforms due to its designation by the U.S. government as a foreign terrorist organization. Meta is also "temporarily expanding" its violence and incitement policy and will remove posts that identify hostages, even when done to raise awareness.

BRUSSELS, July 18 (Reuters) - Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok has voluntarily agreed to a "stress test" to prepare for the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), EU industry chief Thierry Breton said on Tuesday. Under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), Alphabet unit Google (GOOGL.O), Meta and other large online platforms will risk hefty fines if they do not control illegal content. TikTok will also be subject to the DSA rules, which require companies to manage risk, conduct external and independent auditing, share data with authorities and adopt a code of conduct. "Recent events have shown the impact TikTok has on democracies — and how important independent EU enforcement is," wrote Breton on Twitter. "TikTok voluntarily agreed to perform a #StressTest to prepare for #DSA.

The Brazilian proposal is shaping up to be one of the world's strongest legislations on social media, comparable to the European Union's Digital Services Act enacted last year. They also say it will endanger free posting services for users while allowing censorship as practiced in authoritarian societies. Brazil's Justice Minister Flavio Dino has asked the consumer protection authority to investigate whether the companies engaged in "abusive practices" in campaigning against the bill. The bill was fast tracked in the lower house after a series of fatal attacks in schools which social media allegedly encouraged, and new articles added to the bill have not been debated in Congressional committees before going to the vote.

Elon Musk wouldn't be considered a right-wing extremist, right? It's hard to say if he's an extremist, but he is most definitely implementing policies that favor extremism. Is Elon Musk just bad at his job and unintentionally letting these right-wing extremists through or is it more sinister than that? There's a mythology of the center that the far right advances and that is the mythological center that Elon Musk is interested in promoting.
