New York CNN —Finally, an emoji to represent us all is coming soon: An exhausted face with bags under its eyes. It’s one of eight new emoji that will appear on smartphones and computers next year, which also include a root vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a fingerprint, a shovel, a purple splatter, and a flag for the remote island in the English Channel called Sark. Emojipedia, a popular emoji reference site, released sample images a few months ago. Recently, the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit that oversees global emoji standards and new releases approved the new emoji lineup. The exhausted emoji face had the honors of winning the “most anticipated” emoji in the World Emoji Awards receiving more than 60% of the vote.

Elon Musk announced Twitter would be rebranding to X on Saturday. Now, there's another one which has thicker lines — but Musk says he doesn't like it. Twitter is rebranding to X, but Elon Musk still can't decide what the logo should be. The company subtly introduced a new version of the X on Tuesday, which is very similar except for thicker lines. The rebrand also irritated former Twitter employees, who deplored the X logo appearing on their LinkedIn profiles.

Twitter on Monday rolled out its new logo and brand: 𝕏.𝕏 is also a generic Unicode character known as "mathematical double-struck capital X." The new logo is also nearly identical to the lowercase "x" in the Monotype font "Special Alphabet 4." Twitter has a new logo thanks to a major rebrand that Elon Musk announced over the weekend: 𝕏. But the new branding looks suspiciously like a generic Unicode character known as "mathematical double-struck capital X" that was added to the Unicode in March 2001. The company's newly minted CEO, Linda Yaccarino, tweeted that Twitter — now called "X" — will "transform the global town square."

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta already appears to have a trademark for an "X" logo. Musk's new logo for "X" also resembles a Unicode character and a Monotype font. Twitter may have hit a snag while rolling out its new logo — it seems like Meta already holds the rights to it. Meta's "X" logo in its trademark filings looks different from the one Musk has put up on Twitter's website. Meta's "X" looks like two arrows with rounded ends pointing inwards — one white and one blue — while Twitter's "X" is a black and white angular rendition.

Twitter has started its rebrand to the "X" app that owner Elon Musk has long talked about building. Twitter's iconic blue bird logo is out as it rebrands to the "X" app, and it turns out "tweets" are out too. Twitter owner Elon Musk said posts on the platform should take on a new name — "x's" — consistent with the transition to "X." "x's," Musk replied. Twitter ushered in its new image pretty quietly, projecting the new X logo onto its San Francisco headquarters in the middle of the night.

Legendary Female Artists on the Younger Women Who Inspire Them
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +20 min
The Artist’s Mind What it feels like for female artists to wrestle with ambition, ego, ambivalence and inheritance. That isolation has, historically, been especially true for women artists, some of the most celebrated of whom have seen “writer” or “painter” or “filmmaker” treated as a secondary part of their identity. For this issue, we asked legendary female artists to tell us about a younger woman whose work excites them and gives them hope. But for the current generation of women artists, who have come of age with models who more closely resemble them, identity seems more like a source of community than a trap. Women artists, born into a Babylon of exclusion and possibility, reveal that creative inheritance is as promiscuous as legal inheritance is strict.
Metric measurements — also known as the International System of Units, or SI — are managed by a formal international organization. The prefixes Brown came up with are ronna and ronto for 1027 and 10-27 and quetta and quecto for 1030 and 10-30. In fact, SI units used to be based on actual, real-life physical artifacts. "If everyone sticks to SI prefixes," Brown says, "you don't have to go on Wikipedia to find out how long a light-year is or the power in 1 jansky." Pražák proposed sticking to Greek words and letters.

The 40-year evolution from :-) to 😂 emojis
  + stars: | 2022-09-18 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
The evolution from : - ) to 😂It didn’t take long for the original emoticon and its many variations to spread beyond Carnegie Mellon. This emoji remains the favorite among US users, according to an Adobe study released this month. The consortium relies on subcommittee members and emoji users to push the keyboard forward. Daniel, the first woman to run Unicode’s Emoji Subcommittee and a designer at Google, has been a champion for more inclusive emojis. While there are now thousands of emoji options, the main usage remains loyal to the original goal 40 years ago of adding a smile and some levity.
