DETROIT – General Motors on Tuesday reported a 1.5% decline in first quarter U.S. vehicle sales compared to a year ago, as the overall auto industry normalizes after years of disruptions and volatile results. Retail sales to customers were up 6%, GM said. GM's sales are below expectations for the overall industry, which Cox Automotive forecast to be up 5.5% from a year earlier. Buick was the only GM brand to report a sales increase during the quarter, up 16.4% from a year earlier. GM reported sales of its full-size pickups totaled roughly 197,000 units, up 3.6% from a year earlier, during the first quarter – marking their best performance during that time since the first quarter of 2020.

The tentative 4-1/2 year deal will pull more than 7,000 UAW workers in GM component plants, service parts warehouses and what GM calls "subsystems" operations up to the higher wage levels paid to assembly plant workers. As at Ford and Stellantis, GM will raise pay for temporary workers and give them a faster path to full-time status and wages. Eliminating tiers of lower-paid UAW workers at the Detroit Three was a top priority for Fain and UAW bargainers. Fain and UAW members would often wear red t-shirts printed with the slogan "End Tiers" at rallies and on picket lines. GM "has been the worst actor" in creating tiers of lower-wage UAW employees within its operations, Booth said in an Oct. 20 video address.

The historic United Auto Workers strike is over. The UAW announced Monday evening it had reached a tentative agreement with GM, the last of the Detroit car companies to complete negotiations. The 25% pay increases by April 2028 agreed to in the new contracts raise top pay to about $42 an hour, according to the union. For historical comparison, the union said its workers saw pay increases of 23% for all the years from 2001 through 2022. Ford was the first to notch a tentative agreement with the union on Oct. 25 after employees spent 41 days on strike.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra unveiled the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle during the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Production of the current Bolt is set to end in December, but GM has said a revamped version is on the way. General Motors surprised investors – and EV fans – when it said in July that the little Chevrolet Bolt EV will be revamped, rather than killed off entirely at the end of 2023 as originally planned. Launched in late 2016 and originally aimed at the ride-sharing market, the Bolt had never sold as well as GM had originally hoped. That sales surge is a big part of why GM decided to keep the Bolt around.

"The UAW is holding the deal hostage over battery plants," said Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley on Sept. 29. GM had been set to begin production of the electric Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in late 2024 at the suburban Detroit plant. Ford said in July it would slow the ramp-up of electric vehicle production and forecast a full-year loss of $4.5 billion on its EV unit. "The company’s focus on the future must include an emphasis on workplace safety to ensure the well-being of its employees," OSHA Area Director Howard Eberts in Cleveland said. OSHA said Ultium needs to install required machine guarding, train workers in hazardous energy control and emergency response procedures and make other changes. Since the Warren, Ohio, facility began battery cell production in August 2022, OSHA has cited the plant 11 times, the agency said.
