Biden Not Charged by Special Counsel for Mishandling Documents

Special Counsel Robert Hur said he opted against bringing criminal charges after a 15-month investigation because Biden cooperated and would likely be difficult to convict. Hur's conclusion ensures that Biden, unlike his expected 2024 presidential rival Donald Trump, will not risk prison time for mishandling sensitive government documents. Biden has also sought to draw a contrast with Trump on issues of personal ethics and national security. Trump has described the four criminal prosecutions he faces — including one for his handling of classified documents — as politically motivated. The White House said Biden's attorneys found a small number of classified documents and turned them over after discovery.

On Dec. 7, when Trump appeared in a Manhattan court for a civil fraud trial, his main fundraising group reported taking in around $200,000 in online contributions. The recent slowdown suggests Trump is getting diminishing returns from his legal problems as he closes in on his Republican Party's nomination to face Democratic incumbent Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 election. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the apparent fundraising slowdown. SLOWDOWNThe smaller daily hauls around Trump's legal problems in late 2023 were part of a broader slowdown in his campaign's fundraising. Trump's legal problems are also showing increasing signs of being a direct drag on the finances of his election effort.

Wiles was hired to help Trump's campaign win Florida in the 2016 election, securing a major upset against Democrat Hillary Clinton. He is a close confidant of the former president and a digital expert, recording videos of Trump's campaign appearances for use on social media. A longtime political strategist, Miller initially worked for Texas Senator Ted Cruz in the 2016 presidential campaign, which pitted him against Trump. Jack started out in the 2016 presidential campaign working for Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon who went on to become Housing and Urban Development Secretary in the Trump administration.

By Alexandra Ulmer(Reuters) -Hotelier Robert Bigelow told Reuters on Tuesday he gave Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump $1 million for his legal fees and agreed to donate another $20 million to a pro-Trump outside group for campaign purposes. "I gave him $1 million towards his legal fees a few weeks ago. Bigelow's donations also highlight the unusual role some political donors are playing as Trump faces four pending criminal cases this year. BILLS AND FINESFor all of Trump's political success, however, his legal costs are rapidly mounting. When asked whether he was considering donating more to help pay Trump's legal fees, Bigelow declined to comment.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis speaks at the third Republican candidates' U.S. presidential debate of the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign hosted by NBC News at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida, U.S., November 8, 2023. Laxalt's resignation is significant because Never Back Down has been playing an unusually prominent role in DeSantis' campaign. Laxalt did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did DeSantis' campaign. Both DeSantis and Haley are more than 40 points behind former President Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner in most national polls. The Iowa Republican caucuses on Jan. 15 will kick off the presidential nominating contests.

It's a high-risk gambit for the Florida governor, Republican strategists said. They insist Newsom could be a presidential contender as early as next year, though the governor has pledged to stand behind Biden's bid. "Ron DeSantis looks forward to sharing the stark contrast between his vision to revive our nation and Newsom's blueprint for failure," DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier said in an email. Nathan Click, a Newsom adviser, said his team was "shocked" when DeSantis agreed to the California governor's proposal to debate. The Trump campaign did not comment on the debate.

Trump, according to aggregates of national opinion polls, holds about a 50-percentage-point lead over her, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also in the mix. Trump also has large leads in early Republican nominating states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. The polls show her tied with DeSantis in Iowa and surpassing him in New Hampshire. Should Haley's rise continue, she would likely face a full onslaught of attacks from the Trump campaign, pro-Trump social media influencers, and related super PAC spending groups. Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally in Claremont, New Hampshire, U.S., November 11, 2023. The unprecedented legal turmoil has prompted questions about what would happen to Trump's campaign if he was convicted or jailed. Asked in an interview with Reuters whether he would still support Trump if he were convicted, Marcus replied, "I think so. "I never discussed his legal fees or his legal problems," Marcus said, adding that Trump was "very happy" about his support. Vivek Ramaswamy, a brash multimillionaire former biotech executive, took a swipe at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over his cowboy boots, echoing speculation the shoes contain hidden lifts to boost his height. Five Republican candidates took part in Wednesday's debate. Trump allies have relentlessly hammered DeSantis over his cowboy boots, suggesting that DeSantis has hidden lifts inside them. DeSantis has said the boots are standard boots from Lucchese, a Texas-based western style shoe maker. Haley, who clashed with Ramaswamy several times during Wednesday's debate, corrected him, saying she actually wears five-inch heels.
