CNN —Russia carried out a “massive” missile attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure overnight into Wednesday, according to local authorities, in the biggest aerial onslaught by Russian forces for weeks. Russia used 76 air attack weapons in the assault, including 55 missiles and 21 drones launched from Russia and Russian controlled areas, according to Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk. CNN —A Russian missile strike hit civilian infrastructure in the Ukrainian city of Odesa, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens of others, Ukrainian officials said Friday. “The Russian missile attack killed a paramedic and a rescue worker who had arrived at the scene after the first explosion to provide assistance. Ukrainian troops face a perilous challenge in their continued fight against Russia — land mines. The mines have blighted an area of Ukraine roughly the size of Florida, per The Washington Post. Greg Crowther, the director of programs for the Mines Advisory Group, a nongovernmental organization that aids individuals affected by land mines, told The Post that the mine situation in Ukraine was unlike anything seen in recent decades. The report also detailed the lengths taken by Russian forces to make vast expanses of Ukrainian farmland either too difficult to navigate or effectively unusable. "To date, the Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts remain the most contaminated regions of all the liberated territories, as Russian forces had been present there for a longer period of time," the report says.

Much of the damage was carried out by Russia's powerful Khinzal hypersonic missile, which can evade air defenses. At least nine people have been killed in Ukraine, in areas across the country and as far west as Lviv. The bloody battle for the eastern city of Bakhmut wages on, but Russian mercenary group Wagner may be taking a "tactical pause," according to the Institute for the Study of War, a U.S. think tank. Kharkiv's governor reports that the energy situation in his city is "difficult," but that critical energy supplies and water have already been "almost completely restored."

Dec 25 (Reuters) - Three Ukrainian emergency services workers were killed on Saturday when a mine exploded while they were demining parts of the Kherson region, said the emergency service of another region, in which they served. "All three selflessly served in the emergency and rescue squad of the Special Purpose Unit of the State Department of Ukraine in Zhytomyr region and performed the task of demining territories liberated from the enemy in the Kherson region," the Zhytomyr emergency service said on its Facebook page. Russia, which invaded Ukraine 10 months ago, controls most but not all of Kherson region. By mid-November, Ukrainian forces retook Kherson city - the region's administrative centre - and a number of settlements in the region. On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities said a Russian strike had killed at least 10 people in the Kherson City, while Moscow blamed Ukrainian forces for the attack.

A Russian missile attack on a hospital in the Zaporizhzhia region killed a newborn, officials said. Other than the baby, the child's mother was the only patient at the facility, according to a Telegram post by the country's emergency services. The hospital was located near the frontlines of the fighting in the Zaporizhzhia region, which is also home to the largest nuclear plant in Europe, Ukrainian emergency services said. Oleksandr Starukh, the regional governor of the Zaporizhzhia region, said in a Telegram post that the "small maternity ward" had been hit by "huge missiles," according to NBC News. Ukrainian Emergency Services said multiple regions were attacked and officials responded to 159 incidents and detected and removed 1,453 explosive objects on Wednesday alone.

Millions of Ukrainians face a deadly winter — and it isn't just the risk of being hit by Russian bombs. “This winter will be life-threatening for millions of people in Ukraine,” according to Dr. Hans Henri Kluge, the United Nations health agency’s regional director for Europe. Average winter temperatures in Ukraine are around 27 degrees Fahrenheit, and are expected to reach minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the country in the coming months, the WHO said. Ukrainian officials say the wreckage of Shahed-136 drones — which are fitted with a warhead and fly directly into their target — have been found at the site of bomb attacks across the country. The city was recently retaken by Ukrainian forces following a Russian retreat.
