Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni gestures near his herd of Acholi cattle at his farm in Kisozi settlement of Gomba district, in the Central Region of Uganda, January 16, 2022. Uganda's trade push follows several years of reduced Chinese lending to the continent and as programmes designed to offer relief to indebted countries as they recover from COVID 19-induced slumps start to expire. DEBT CANCELLATIONMuseveni wants to expand regional trade, but many barriers remain despite there being a free trade agreement in the region. Uganda used to sell lots of milk to neighbour Kenya, but Kenya restricted sales in 2019 and Uganda's milk exports are now 50% of what they used to be before the curbs. Uganda says the restrictions were imposed due to concern about cheap imports despite the regional free trade treaty.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Apple warned two Ugandan journalists and an opposition figure last week that their iPhones may have been hacked by a state-sponsored surveillance entity, the targeted people said on Saturday, and at least one attack appeared to have employed spyware from an Israeli company blacklisted by the United States. The latest revelations add Uganda to the list of countries where journalists, human rights activists and lawyers have been targeted using the sophisticated Israeli-made spyware, known as Pegasus. The disclosure of the Apple warning notices to the three Ugandans came one day after reports that American diplomats in the East African nation also had their iPhones hacked with Pegasus. Those diplomats were the first American government officials known to have been targeted by the Pegasus tool, which is designed to sneak into a user’s phone and give the invader access to its contents without being detected. Apple has said iPhones equipped with its latest software are not at risk.

KINSHASA, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Democratic Republic of Congo has said it has arrested a Middle Eastern national for alleged ties to an Islamist militia in the east of DRC, potentially the first time a non-African fighter has been found working with the group. According to documents seen by Reuters, however, the man was carrying a Kosovo residence permit, identifying him as a 40-year-old Saudi Arabian national. Former ADF fighters have told United Nations investigators the group has used at least two drones for surveillance. In May, the government introduced martial law to pacify the country's mineral-rich east, where the ADF and over 100 other armed groups operate. However, the number of civilians killed in militia attacks has largely remained unchanged, analysis by rights watchdog Human Rights Watch has shown.
