CNN —A pro-Trump lawyer who tried to overturn the 2020 election was arrested Monday after a court hearing about her recent leak of internal emails belonging to Dominion Voting Systems. In the last 24 hours, Leaf has posted more than 2,000 internal Dominion documents on his social media account. The marshals declined to say whether they arrested her, and she didn’t answer messages seeking comment after the hearing. Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference after attending the E. Jean Carroll second civil trial in New York City on Jan. 17, 2024. Former President Donald Trump on Friday appealed a civil defamation verdict in favor of writer E. Jean Carroll, and posted a $91.6 million bond as he asked to avoid having to pay damages he owes her as he pursues that appeal. The $91.6 million bond he posted is meant to secure that damage award in the event his appeal of January's jury verdict fails. Trump will get the money from the bond back if he wins his appeal. Manhattan federal court Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is not related to Carroll's lawyer, on Thursday denied a request by Trump to delay paying the writer.

CNN —The US government is spending nearly $1 million a month to maintain a luxury superyacht seized from a sanctioned Russian oligarch as part of the Justice Department’s effort to put pressure on the Kremlin. The superyacht was seized while docked in a port in Fiji in 2022 by local law enforcement officials and the FBI. Now, federal prosecutors have asked a judge for permission to sell the vessel saying its expenses are excessive and has cost the government about $20 million, according to recent court filings. The monthly costs total roughly $600,000 to maintain the yacht, plus $144,000 in insurance, according to court records. Maintaining the Amadea is certainly expensive, and Claimants never intended for U.S. taxpayers to shoulder that burden.

Democrats accuse X of profiting from Hamas propaganda

Washington CNN —A group of House Democrats has accused X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, of profiting from Hamas propaganda and misinformation about the Israel-Hamas war after reports by independent researchers found numerous accounts glorifying the US-sanctioned terror group. More than two dozen US lawmakers signed the letter dated Tuesday addressed to X owner Elon Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino. Musk sued Media Matters on Monday, accusing it of distorting the likelihood that ads may be shown against extremist material. But some legal critics have cast doubt on the complaint, calling it “weak” and “bogus” in the face of the First Amendment. The letter calls for Yaccarino and Musk to answer by December 1 to allegations that X has amplified terrorist propaganda in violation of its own policies.

In a statement, X said it has been cooperating with the committee. “We have been working in good faith to participate in the Judiciary committee’s hearing on child protection online as safety is our top priority at X,” said Wifredo Fernandez, head of US & Canada government affairs at X.

Marshals have for the first time released data on how many people were shot by their officers or other police working with them. Marshals Service Director Ronald Davis ordered the review last year, saying it reflects the seriousness of shots fired by officers. The report does not include information on whether the shootings were deemed legally justified nor data on more recent shootings, though it does say that those outlined in the report were independently investigated. The aim was to study policies, training, tactics and equipment to figure out ways to make shootings less likely or destructive in the future, the report released Tuesday states. A judge approved a request for Sam Bankman-Fried to wear business attire in court. Judges often allow jailed inmates to wear suits to avoid possible juror bias if they wore prison uniform. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe judge overseeing the trial of Sam Bankman-Fried approved a request on Wednesday for the FTX founder to wear business attire in court. Now behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center, his lawyers submitted a proposed order on Tuesday which asked Kaplan to allow Bankman-Fried to wear "business attire clothing." Judges often let jailed inmates wear business attire in court, because wearing a prison uniform could prejudice the jury.
