An American Airlines' Embraer E175LR (front), an American Airlines' Boeing 737 (C) and an American Airlines' Boeing 737 are seen parked at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York on May 24, 2024. American Airlines is in talks to make Citigroup its exclusive credit card partner, dropping rival issuer Barclays from a partnership that dates back to the airline's 2013 takeover of US Airways, said people with knowledge of the negotiations. Banks' co-brand deals with airlines, retailers and hotel chains are some of the most hotly contested negotiations in the industry. Carriers have said growth in card spending has far exceeded that of passenger revenue in recent years. While it says it has the largest loyalty program, American was out-earned by Delta there, which made nearly $7 billion in payments from its American Express card partnership last year, compared to $5.2 billion for American.

Southwest Airlines announced Monday that it's adding former US Airways CEO Rakesh Gangwal to its board of directors. The latest defensive maneuver aims to blunt Elliott's accusations that Southwest's board is long-tenured and insular. Gangwal was CEO of the now-defunct US Airways in the late 1990s and early 2000s, before founding Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo in 2006. Southwest announced the board expansion less than a week after it adopted a shareholder rights plan, limiting investors' ability to grow their stakes beyond a 12.5% threshold. Elliott is seeking the ouster of Kelly, Southwest's CEO before becoming executive chair, and Bob Jordan, who has served as Southwest's CEO since 2022.

6 Podcasts About the Joys and Terrors of Air Travel
  + stars: | 2024-05-25 | by ( Emma Dibdin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
It’s a nerve-racking time to be a frequent flier in the United States. Despite this, air travel statistically remains the safest form of mass transit in the United States, and it’s worth keeping the risks in perspective. Some of these podcasts do just that by exploring the true stories of air disasters (and why they are so rare), while others are love letters to life in the skies, hosted by proud aviation geeks who have travel tips, airport reviews and nostalgic industry history to share. Billed as “a true crime podcast in the air,” this series ended production last summer but has a back catalog of 150 episodes, each focusing on a different air disaster in meticulous detail. Both hosts are also regular air travelers, and they share packing tips, review specific aircrafts and airlines and reflect on how travel has changed throughout these recent, turbulent years.

In July, American offloaded a passenger after he got into an argument with a flight attendant. AdvertisementHere are three of Laurie's pet peeves as a flight attendant and how to avoid them. Laurie said passengers should pay for their seats in advance rather than trying to move to other passengers' seats once on board — especially without telling the cabin crew. "Don't 'steal' the seat and think the flight attendant won't notice. "As a crewmember, I always tried to have fun and relate to my passengers," Laurie said.

Travel expert Bobby Laurie shared two ways travelers can save money on airfare. Laurie suggested travelers search for the cheapest upgrades and not just the cheapest overall fare. Laurie said travelers should avoid searching their flights on the same search engine, device, or IP network as many airlines have a dynamic pricing strategy. I've seen many times situations where first class or premium economy was cheaper than the coach ticket," Laurie said. Laurie said travelers should avoid spending extra for a refundable fare when booking with major US airlines.

The Biden administration’s fight against consolidation in the airline industry will be tested Tuesday with lawyers for JetBlue Airways and the Justice Department squaring off in court. The administration is suing to block JetBlue’s proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines. The Justice Department is fresh off victory in a previous lawsuit that killed a partnership between JetBlue and American Airlines. If it swallows Spirit, JetBlue will leapfrog Alaska Airlines but still control less than 10% of the U.S. air-travel market. The Justice Department argues, however, that Spirit is the disruptive force that needs to be protected.

Seagulls close Venice airport

CNN —Venice may be know as La Serenissima, but for those who have encountered her resident seagulls, the experience can be anything but serene. Now, the winged criminals have gone one stop further, causing an hour-long shutdown and two hours of chaos at the city’s airport. Venice Marco Polo Airport, located north of the city, with a runway adjacent to the lagoon, is the fifth busiest airport in Italy, and the largest in the north of the country outside the Milan area. Twenty incoming flights were diverted to other airports in northern Italy: Treviso, Verona, Trieste and Milan. Venice airport employs a resident falcon, who was dispatched by a falconer to disperse the 200-odd birds.

Even Trump's PAC is skiplagging now
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Brent D. Griffiths | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +2 min
Trump's political action committee has embraced skiplagging, according to federal campaign finance reports. Save America PAC used the tactic as it spent more than $21 million on legal fees. Airlines are increasingly trying to thwart skiplagging as passengers embrace the practice amid rising prices. While some of that money was routed back to Trump's super PAC, more than $21 million was spent on legal fees. A representative for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment about how the former president's orbit is using skiplagging.

I took British Airways' Flying with Confidence course to help me overcome my fear of flying. And I know I'm not alone: up to 40% of Americans have a form of aerophobia, otherwise known as the fear of flying. So, in an effort to face my fears head-on, I recently attended British Airways' Flying with Confidence course. But in the same way that pilots always prepare for the worst kind of turbulence, aircraft designers do too. Breathing is keyOne of the main takeaways from the course was how to control my fear of flying through breath control.

JetBlue said it had informed American last week of its decision to terminate the three-year-old alliance, which allowed the two carriers to coordinate flights and pool revenue. The "Northeast Alliance" with JetBlue helped American compete in the New York market, where it had been losing money. On May 19, U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin in Boston ordered JetBlue and American to end the partnership, saying it "substantially" diminished competition in the domestic market. JetBlue said its decision to unwind the alliance would not result in any immediate changes for customers. But without the alliance, Hayes said JetBlue would likely need fewer employees in New York and Boston.

The Justice Department on Tuesday sued to block JetBlue Airways ' $3.8 billion proposed takeover of budget carrier Spirit Airlines , the Biden administration's latest attempt to prevent industry consolidation. Spirit Airlines agreed to sell itself to JetBlue last summer after a long battle for the carrier between JetBlue and Frontier Airlines . A JetBlue-Spirit combination would be the first major U.S. airline merger since Alaska Airlines' takeover of Virgin America in 2016. The Justice Department at the time required Alaska to scale back its code share with American Airlines to clear the deal. Separately, JetBlue is awaiting a ruling on its Northeast partnership with American Airlines, which the Justice Department sued to undo in 2021.
Plane crashes are extremely rare. Data from past crashes and crash tests show that the back of the plane is probably the safest. In the rare case that a plane goes down, some research indicates that the safest place to be sitting is in a middle seat near the back of a plane. A 2015 analysis by Time magazine of the Federal Aviation Administration's aircraft accident database looked at 17 plane crashes with seat charts that could be analyzed. Middle of the plane, middle seat: 39% — about one in 2.5 passengers.
Passengers "were in a panic" after being sent images of plane crashes, per Keshet 12. 10 people were taken off the Pegasus Airlines flight in Tel Aviv for questioning. Passengers on another Pegasus flight in November were sent threatening videos. Last May, nine Israeli citizens were detained after passengers on a plane bound for Turkey received graphic photographs of former plane crashes via AirDrop. Last November, another Pegasus flight from Tel Aviv was delayed after passengers were sent threatening videos, including one of a man practicing at a shooting range, according to Ynet.
I can tell you without hesitation: Both the airlines and the Transportation Department are at fault. Only Congress and the Transportation Department oversee airlines, and the department and its subsidiary, the FAA, have long struggled with a dual mandate to both promote and regulate airlines. Obviously the airline industry also has become too big to care, despite the $54 billion taxpayer bailout during Covid. Since then, the U.S. airline industry has returned to profitability and, in some cases, notched record revenues. Domestic airlines are mistreating passengers with impunity and are clearly unafraid of backlash from consumers, the media or the Transportation Department.
American Airlines Group Inc. named a company veteran as its next finance chief as it reaps the benefits of an uptick in air travel and works to pay down debt. He succeeds Derek Kerr, who has held the CFO role at American since its 2013 merger with US Airways Group. During his 20-year tenure at American and airlines it absorbed, US Airways and America West, Mr. May has held senior-level roles in finance, regional operations and network planning. American is one of several airlines that cut back on flights this year amid widespread delays, staffing shortages and airport congestion. The company has said it plans to pay down about $15 billion of its total debt by the end of 2025.

[1/4] Football fans queue before boarding the first direct commercial flight between Israel and Qatar for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, at Ben Gurion International Airport, near Tel Aviv, Israel November 20, 2022. "There were a few concerns, I cannot deny that," said Sagi Ashkevitz, who was flying out with three friends to his second World Cup. Those boarding the TUS Airways plane at Ben Gurion Airport had originally been told they would have a brief stopover in Cyprus. Six more Tel Aviv-Doha flights for the World Cup have been approved so far, Mizrahi said. Riad Ziadna, a member of Israel's Arab minority who held a soccer ball as he stood in the check-in line, said he believed the World Cup would be "the starter's pistol for coexistence all over the Middle East".
JetBlue Airways finally won over Spirit Airlines with a $3.8 billion takeover deal . JetBlue Airlines and Spirit Airlines are seen on the departure board in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on May 16, 2022 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. President Joe Biden's Justice Department has vowed to challenge out any deals that could harm competition. The Justice Department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment but the agency's antitrust chief, Jonathan Kanter, has promised a hard stance against anti-competition. Without that, "there would be a public perception that [the Justice Department] just caved," he said.
