KYIV, Ukraine — The shots fired by the Secret Service near former President Donald Trump at a Florida golf course Sunday are ringing out 5,000 miles away — in the Russia-Ukraine war. After what officials called the second assassination attempt on Trump in three months, a man named Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was taken into custody and charged. Routh had already been extensively profiled in the Western media as an ardent supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s ongoing invasion. Ukraine sought Monday to distance itself from Routh, with the country’s international legion — the military unit that includes foreign volunteers — saying it had nothing to do with him. “We would like to clarify that Ryan Wesley Routh has never been part of, associated with, or linked to the International Legion in any capacity.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Saturday he is being investigated for collecting a whale specimen. Kennedy said that he responded in a letter, baselessly linking the National Marine Fisheries Service with whale deaths and calling for the agency to investigate. Kennedy did not go into details about the whale incident, but his daughter had previously described a situation involving a whale that took place 30 years ago. Kennedy endorsed Trump in August and has since been on the campaign trail urging supporters to back the former president. Standing near them was another figure whose sway with the Republican nominee also cannot be discounted: the far-right provocateur Laura Loomer. Her anti-Muslim social media posts eventually earned her a ban from Twitter that lasted until billionaire Elon Musk bought the website, now known as X, and restored her account. She knows his personal number and has utilized it, one source familiar with the relationship told CNN. When Trump landed in Philadelphia on Tuesday before his debate against Harris, Loomer was among the close allies seen deboarding his private plane. In August of last year, Trump even suggested the campaign hire Loomer for an official role, sources told CNN at the time.

In mounting an attack against Trump, Harris can pick and choose from a Golden Corral-scale buffet of material. “I suspect there will be some surprises during the debate,” Jason Miller, a Trump campaign spokesman, said Monday while briefing reporters. Will Trump speak more broadly beyond his base? Even when he knocked Biden out of the race in the last debate, Trump didn’t inspire key voting blocs. “He’s going to talk about what he wants.

It was 2019, and the second Democratic presidential primary debate was unfolding in Detroit when then-Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii went for the jugular. Still, it turned into a major moment for Gabbard — even though Harris forcefully responded — and it was a standout episode in her short-lived 2020 presidential campaign. It’s coming into view again now in the run-up to Tuesday’s second presidential debate after Donald Trump tapped Gabbard to assist him in his debate preparations. “Tulsi Gabbard whipped Kamala Harris’ butt on the debate stage,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. Raising that prospect in the first place at the time rankled the Biden campaign.

Read previewDonald Trump is no longer running against President Joe Biden. Democrats have eagerly and swiftly moved on, turning their attention toward Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign and the sudden burst of enthusiasm that the ticket swap generated within the party's base. In an interview released Tuesday, the podcaster Lex Fridman asked Trump if he would like to see Harris sit for more interviews. "I don't know why he gave up, I don't know why he quit," Trump wrote. It's a dynamic that's led some Democrats to question whether Trump is personally upset by Biden's decision to withdraw from the race.

The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. It’s the second time the vice president will visit the city this week after campaigning with Biden on Labor Day.

Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who has endorsed Republican former President Donald Trump's campaign, is advising the GOP nominee to focus on Vice President Kamala Harris' policy pivots in their upcoming debate. Still, Gabbard is uniquely suited to help Trump understand what it would be like to debate Harris, given her firsthand experience during the 2020 Democratic primary contest. "What I pointed out in that debate stage in the 2020 campaign was her hypocrisy," Gabbard said. At the time, criminal justice reform was a very popular issue among Democratic primary voters. The Trump campaign recently added both Gabbard and RFK Jr. to its official transition team, and both are in reported talks for potential cabinet positions if Trump wins the White House.

On Thursday morning, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told his 90 million followers on X that they would hear his plan to make the U.S. the crypto capital of the planet that same day. But after a rally in Michigan and a town hall in Wisconsin, Thursday ended with no sign of Trump's plan for digital assets. A campaign spokesman did not reply when CNBC asked what happened to the crypto plan rollout. Throughout the day Thursday, CNBC heard from several pro-crypto Trump supporters who were eagerly anticipating what the Republican nominee might say. It was unclear who Trump meant by "they," and a Trump campaign spokesman did not respond to questions from CNBC about the announcement.

The best day of Kamala Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign was its first. In that speech, delivered in January 2019, Ms. Harris owned her record as a prosecutor, told personal stories about the impact of her family and multicultural upbringing, and struck fear in the heart of her Democratic rivals. The argument for her candidacy at the time was similar to the arguments that voters and political analysts are making in her favor right now. Mr. Biden had the experience, Ms. Warren had the policy, and Senator Bernie Sanders had the progressive appeal — but Ms. Harris was the candidate who could theoretically do all the above. It did not matter that in that crowded primary contest, few voters said she was their first choice.

CNN —In recent weeks, an increasingly familiar list of Republicans has dominated the not-very-subtle competition to become Donald Trump’s running mate. Trump himself has added to the air of inevitability by floating these names in interviews and appearances over and over. In response, Rodgers said in a social media post he has “never been of the opinion that the events did not take place” and called the shooting “an absolute tragedy.” In a statement to CNN, Kennedy campaign spokesperson Stefanie Spear called the Sandy Hook shooting “a horrific tragedy.”Last week, CNN reported that Robbins and Kennedy had met as early as 2023 about Robbins being Kennedy’s running mate. The event marks a critical moment for Kennedy’s White House bid that could accelerate his efforts to gain ballot access in all 50 states. In a new interview, Elon Musk said prescription ketamine has been helpful in treating his occasional depressive episodes and suggested that taking the drug has been beneficial for investors in his companies. Musk was asked by Lemon whether ketamine could "get in the way" of his government contracts and his standing on Wall Street.
