TubiHow Tubi found a Gen-Z audienceTubi, which was acquired by Fox in 2020 for $440 million, didn't deliberately aim at Gen Z when it started in 2014. Because Gen Z spends so much time on social media, they're used to entertainment being free. "Gen Z is orienting themselves around shared interests, subculture interests. The plan is to turn fans into promotors, recognizing that Gen Z is heavily influenced by their friends' recommendations; the initiative is in beta. My thesis is not that people are going to cancel their Netflix subscriptions and go running to Tubi," Parlapiano said.

CNN —Lachlan Murdoch is stepping onto center stage. On Wednesday, his father, Rupert Murdoch, officially stepped down as chairman of News Corporation, the print publishing arm of the billionaire mogul’s powerful media empire, marking the end of an era. In his final remarks on Wednesday to the News Corporation board as chairman, Murdoch hit on a number of topics. His profile rose when he took on the role of executive chairman in 2015 at what was then 21st Century Fox. But Lachlan, whose Fox News has refrained from openly skewering the GOP frontrunner, has never made such comments in public.

Rupert Murdoch is stepping down as chairman of the board of both Fox Corp. and News Corp. , the companies said Thursday. Lachlan Murdoch, one of his sons, will become sole chairman of News Corp. and will continue as Fox Corp.'s executive chair and CEO. At the time, Fox had opposed having the elder Murdoch — as well as other top Fox executives — appearing in person, citing his age. Since July 2022, Murdoch had worked from his home in Montana rather than going into Fox or News Corp. offices, according to a securities filing. News Corp. owns newspapers The Wall Street Journal and New York Post, among other publications, while Fox is the parent company of right-leaning TV networks Fox News and Fox Business.

But streaming TV is still a good deal. I wrote in May about why a wave of price hikes for ad-free streaming services was on the horizon. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhat's really coming to an end right now is not the end of cheap streaming but the end of cheap ad-free streaming. That's why cable TV mostly has ads (with some add-on exceptions like HBO and other premium cable channels). "Streamflation" is a drag, but I'm not pining for the cable bundle — and I doubt other cord-cutters are either.

Over the past few years, Tubi has quietly amassed a thriving collection of Black-led independent movies. “Cinnamon” is the first Tubi premiere under the banner Black Noir Cinema, an initiative led by Village Roadshow Pictures. It’s a nifty standard-bearer: a gas station attendant and aspiring singer, Jodi (Hailey Kilgore), and a pickpocket, Eddie (David Iacono), team up for an inside job. The robbery becomes a self-own when someone from a local crime family — led by Pam Grier — gets killed in the process. They lean hard on the gas station owner, Wally (Damon Wayans), and then zero in on Jodi and Eddie.

Stream These Five Cormac McCarthy Film Adaptations
  + stars: | 2023-06-13 | by ( Chris Vognar | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The Coen brothers return to the Texas noir roots of their first feature, “Blood Simple,” for the most successful McCarthy adaptation to date. It won Oscars for best picture, directing and screenwriting, as well as Javier Bardem’s supporting turn as one of McCarthy’s nihilistic villains, an implacable killing machine who speaks in riddles and engages his prey in fatal rhetorical jousts. But the heart of the movie, about a briefcase full of money and the in-over-his-head opportunist (Josh Brolin) who pilfers it, is Tommy Lee Jones as a small-town sheriff who wants out of the game, which seems to get more sinister and incomprehensible by the minute. He is the old man of the title and the author’s surrogate, a poetic soul just trying to wait it out until it’s all over. ‘The Road’ (2009)Stream it on Tubi, Vudu and Freevee.

(AP Photo/Universal Pictures) Photo Credit: Universal Pictures/Tippett StudioAfter spending years amassing streaming subscribers at great cost, media companies now need to make some profits. Look no further for proof of that than the most recent annual Upfronts, the events where media companies like Fox Corp ., Warner Bros. During Disney's earnings call earlier this month, CEO Bob Iger put new emphasis on ad-supported streaming. 'We need ads'There's been an uptick of consumers signing up for ad-supported streaming subscriptions. But media companies are struggling with the question of whether ad-tier subscriptions make up for other losses.

May 9 (Reuters) - Broadcaster Fox Corp (FOXA.O) beat estimates for third-quarter revenue and adjusted profit on Tuesday, as recession-wary companies continued to advertise on its network even as they cut their spending on other marketing channels. Shares of the company rose more than 4% in premarket trading. Total revenue rose 18% to $4.08 billion, inching past analysts' estimates of $4.03 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Fox's ad revenue also surged 43% to $1.88 billion, well past the expectation of $1.67 billion. The upbeat results from Fox, which operates Fox News and a range of sports channels, underscore the cautious approach by advertisers who are mostly buying ad slots on dominant networks given their reach.
The News Corporation headquarters, which is also home to Fox News, stands in Manhattan on April 18, 2023 in New York City. Fox Corp. reported a quarterly net loss on Tuesday due to the costs related to its settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, despite revenue that was lifted by the Super Bowl and its fast ad-supported streaming service Tubi. Fox notched $4.08 billion in quarterly revenue, up 18% from the same period last year. The company also saw a boost after airing more NFL games during the season and from increased viewership for Tubi. Fox is the top-rated cable news channel, even as prime-time ratings in Carlson's slot have slid since his departure.

Fox announces new unit to house digital businesses
  + stars: | 2023-04-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
April 26 (Reuters) - Media company Fox Corp (FOXA.O) on Wednesday said it would house its standalone digital businesses under a new unit, Tubi Media Group, along with its news, sports and entertainment digital platforms. Fox's standalone digital businesses include free, ad-supported streaming platform Tubi, which Fox acquired in 2020; Tubi founder Farhad Massoudi will now step down as its chief executive officer. Paul Cheesbrough, who previously served as technology chief and president of Fox's digital unit, will become the CEO of the new division, the company said. On Monday, Fox News Media and its top-rated host Tucker Carlson agreed to part ways, less than a week after parent Fox settled a defamation lawsuit in which Carlson played a central role, for $787.5 million. Fox said Tubi Media Group will announce the new CEO for Tubi Streaming in the near future.
After shelling out $787.5 billion to settle Dominion's lawsuit, Fox has more troubles on the way. Atop the list is a separate lawsuit from Smartmatic, another election technology company that sued Fox News Network and its parent company, Fox Corp., in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. Smartmatic's defamation lawsuit asks for $2.7 billion in damages and was filed against Fox Corp.; Fox News Network; hosts Jeanine Pirro, Maria Bartiromo, and Lou Dobbs; and Powell and Giuliani. Aside from the Smartmatic case, Fox News has to deal with potential shareholder lawsuits. The overall value of Fox Corp. — which also includes Fox Sports and the streaming service Tubi — is more than $17.6 billion.
In the moments after I watched the judge announce the settlement in court, 16 things went through my mind:1. Evidence obtained by Dominion in the lawsuit and filed to court ahead of the settlement appeared to support that theory. There's always the Smartmatic case. In court filings ahead of the settlement, Fox complained about the $1.6 billion price tag Dominion put on the lawsuit. "Would be pretty unreal if you guys like 20x'ed your Dominion investment with these lawsuits," read one text to a Staple Street executive cited in a Fox court filing.
Fox agreed to a $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems on Tuesday. But a senior media executive told Insider that insurance typically handles these types of payments. Fox Corp. had nearly $4.1 billion of cash on hand, according to comments made in February by company CEO Lachlan Murdoch. Fox Corp., which also owns assets such as the broadcast network and streamer Tubi, has a market capitalization of $17.61 billion as of Tuesday. In 2017, Fox also agreed to a $90 million "derivatives" settlement against company officers over sexual harassment issues at Fox News, according to Reuters.
Called Max, the app will feature content from HBO Max and Discovery+. Discovery announced the details of its new streaming app on Wednesday, after much anticipation from Hollywood and Madison Avenue. The prices will stay the same for HBO Max subscribers, who will begin to be automatically ported over to the new service. Presenting the entire WBD content catalog on the combined streamer without diluting HBO's prestige factor was another challenge. HBO Max has greater recognition with younger consumers, according to a new Samba TV/HarrisX poll, which could help grow awareness for Discovery+.
Google TV gets 800 free channels
  + stars: | 2023-04-11 | by ( Ashley Capoot | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: 1 min
Google announced that starting Tuesday it's adding more than 800 free channels to its Google TV app on the Chromecast streaming device and select TVs made by Sony, CL, Hisense and Philips. Google's aggregation of several existing free TV services like Fox's Tubi, Paramount Global's Pluto TV and Haystack News is a move to differentiate its streaming operating interface from competitors, including Roku , Apple and Amazon . The Alphabet unit said it is integrating free channels into the "Live" tab where users will see content from channels like NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX. The service is launching in the U.S. on all Google TV devices. Eligible Android TV devices will be able to access the new TV guide and free channels later this year.
Rupert Murdoch admitted Fox News hosts endorsed falsehoods about the 2020 election. Murdoch chairs Fox Corporation, which argues it isn't responsible for claims made on subsidiary Fox News. Here was the chair of Fox Corporation, a 91-year-old mogul atop a conservative media empire, admitting to lies that damaged democracy. When asked by Dominion's lawyers in a January deposition whether he thought Fox hosts were truthful about the election, Murdoch was candid. Fox Corporation also manages subsidiaries like Fox Sports, a large number of local TV stations, TMZ, Tubi, and a blockchain company.
